Many claim that God speaks directly to them, often in dreams, and believe that Christians are called to wage a spiritual battle for control of the United States.

These people are dangerous.

I increasingly feel like religious indoctrination in childhood creates a kind of mental illness or disability by disrupting the development of critical thinking skills.

This is not accidental. Many religious scholars have talked about the need to "instruct" children when they're very young - by the age of three or four.

[–] cabron_offsets@lemmy.world 27 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I experienced this first hand and it was stunting, if not traumatic. I came to peace with myself for being atheist only in my 20s.

[–] NegativeInf@lemmy.world 14 points 4 months ago

I have trauma from this, but from the other end. So many stunted people trying to force insanity on me as if it were logic. For the longest time I thought I was crazy or broken for not being able to make some connection they were. Turns out, there's no connections. Just gut feeling.

Because it's normalized gaslighting. If a kid isn't encouraged to think critically and is told to ignore their own perception of the world, they learn to seek truth externally from themselves.

Teaching children religion is child abuse. It happened to me and it was abuse. My parents didn't realize it and I forgive them because they were abused by it too but we need to start calling it what it is.

Why don't people create more propaganda that paints God as a transexual black woman sitting on the chair? Jesus as someone gay too? I feel like, if we destroy the image of God being a white bearded old man, all the religious people will develop second thoughts, specially the racist ones, which is the majority.

There is a reason why there hasn't been a black pope, or a female pope, which is Christianity being super racist and misogynistic. If their excuse is that "women are weaker creatures that cannot be the voice of God" or, as I was told in my super religious school when I was a kid and Pope John Paul II died: "if the next pope is black, it means the Antichrist is here". For a fucking 12 year old to tell me that it meant their parents were racist as hell, and I live in Mexico, in a state where there are literally like 1 or 2 black people per city, I am not exageratting.

Not only that, but if you watch the Oscar-award winner movie, Spotlight, you will see how did the Vatican and the Pope protect over a hundred of pedophiles in one american state alone out of the 50 if I don't remember wrong. In poorer countries like Mexico or southeramerican ones, they are more rampant and worse, there's a mexican movie depicting a priest having sex with a little girl and then taking her to take an abortion, in a very poor town outside the big cities. I am sure that kind of shit is so, so common here, just without the ability to make enough noise about it worldwide, it sickens me.

Nobody, absolutely nobody, needs religion to be a good person, we should indocrinate this to our kids, not religion. We can teach the best religious' values without the divine divisive bullshit. The Vatican is covered in gold, yet a youtuber like mr beast has done more good with his money than they have ever done in decades, it's really embarrassing to see their obvious evilness. Religion is poison.

There have actually been three popes from Africa! Though the last one was pope from 492 to 496. Not 1492... 492.

I totally agree with you though, I just had to "uh actually' a little because I think it's interesting.

According to Genesis, man was made in god’s image. Archeologists have determined that the oldest humans were black. It would be more accurate for sure.

[–] aphlamingphoenix@lemm.ee 3 points 4 months ago

The Scathing Atheist podcast has been reading through the new testament lately with Jesus played as a sassy gay man.

[–] qarbone@lemmy.world -1 points 4 months ago (1 children)

How do paint a woman as transexual? Why would a being without what we can recognize as a physical body even need reassignment surgery?

Or even Jesus as gay? Is he gonna be gulpin down glizzys? Because Rule 34 assures us that already exists.

I think you're a little lost in the weeds, bruv.

If anything, republicans are perfectly represented by Jeezuz Jeezy if you will because he is a total asshole true and thru. Yeah, that's right, Jesus Christ is an asshole. Last night for example a bunch of people died in Gaza and Ukraine, innocent, hungry people. And guess what? putin is still alive, Mr Yahoo is still alive. They probably had some of the best tasting grapes by licking them off virgins bodies yesterday while they were freely murdering. Where's Jesus? Oh! It's s mystery! Oh he's using putin for a good cause. Bullshit! The Christian Church is pure bullshit.

Is that really the quiet part anymore? The GOP being anti-choice and pro-matricide is pretty fucking obvious.

The quiet part, for me at least, is being anti-democratic, anti-interracial marriages, and wanting to forcefully convert Americans to Christianity.

[–] iAmTheTot@sh.itjust.works 9 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I wouldn't even say the last one is the quiet part. They are pretty forward about that, too.

[–] xmunk@sh.itjust.works 9 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Sorta? With both the last ones they've been open about discouraging it but our current Scotus seems to be chomping at the bit to kill Loving v Virginia and I'm sure they're doing homework to try and kill separation of church and state.

[–] iAmTheTot@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

FYI, the expression is "champing at the bit".

[–] xmunk@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 months ago

Oh neat, TIL another eggcorn I misunderstood.

[–] Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

Yeah. I saw it coming years ago. There's no more quiet part, only people who haven't been listening

[–] notsure@fedia.io 15 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Shut up! I am better than you because my skin colour matches der Fuhrer. Der Fuhrer says that rich people are better! Der Fuhrer says God promotes him! All hail!

[–] notsure@fedia.io 6 points 4 months ago

"Pro-Life" but they will execute oceans of lives, in their regime.

I expect full-on human-sacrifice worship of Trump within 4y of his gaining dictatorship.

( there's been continuous human-sacrifice-cult activity in the Americas, Central & northward, for about 11.7 millenia, ttbomk.

This won't be anything new: it'll just be the same-old same-old getting blatent about it.

I bet every one of you an imaginary-dime, right now, that the "uncanny valley" is going to be stark on Trump's face, within 4y, to those who aren't his worshippers.

I don't know if there's a remind-me-bot thingy for lemmy, but if there is, & anybody wants to set a reminder, so you can prove me wrong, go for it.

I think this bet of mine is certain.
