Watson and Wraith from Apex Legends.

Apex needs more wholesome charachters.

Every legends personality is just "rude, arrogant and edgy as fuck".

There's basically just Gibby and Watson, who are different. And Watson's personality is 80% puns, which I like.

Is it too much to ask that a squad-based game not to have character that constantly spout one-liners shitting on teammates and opponents alike?

Don't disrespect my boy pathy

Today smells like victory! I love pretending to smell. Sniff sniff!

Hey lifeline wants to have a word with you!

[–] MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Lifeline is ok, but she's not exactly written to be humble.

[–] telllos@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah, she’s a bit bragging, but most lines are pretty positive. “We're in this together. Memba that.”

Pathfinder is wholesome AF. That's literally his whole thing.

Though i agree, we need a genuinely wholesome character to match poor pathy.

It's not just wholesomeness I miss. I just want something other than toxic caricatures of cocky gamers. They're all personifications of "I'm bout to hard carry my worthless teammates and shit all over everyone on this server".

[–] Agamemnon@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

That's why I genuinely liked the Team Fortress 2 cast. They're also caricatures, but at least they got a variety of madness spread across them.

Not true. Mirage isn't like that. Neither is Gibraltar or lifeline. Or even wraith TBH.

The only characters who are like that are Rampart, Valkyrie, revenant, Maggie. And octane.

Wraith - "You know what I look like - come find me." Loba - "Take care when you approach me. I'm in a class of my own." Mirage - ”You want advice? I’ll give some advice - shoot first.” Lifeline - "A win don't come easy. For you."

Every charachter has mega cringe voicelines that would be rude as fuck if uttered by the players in a hypothetical voicechat. It's basically as toxic as it can get while staying PG.

Gibby is like the only real exception, Watson is another but that's because like 80% of her body mass is puns. Why don't we have more variety like that? There's pathfinder, but even his lines are burns masquerading as funny robot man.

I mute character voices, and sacrifice voiced ping info, because the game does a fantastic job replicating the atmosphere of a fucking CoD lobby without ever hearing a word of what your opponents are actually saying. Even if they're chill people, you'd never know because the charachters they are playing can't shut up about how you got absolutely destroyed.

Most of mirages voice lines aren't edge lord. You've picked a rare example. Loba is definitely full of herself. Wraith line doesn't feel all that edgy to me.

No, his personality is "insecure drowning in fake cockyness and failed attempts at humor".

My point is that it's the overarching style of design, in especially post-original legends. And its there to a greater or lesser extent in all of them. It's like they're all focus-grouped to appeal to edgy fourteen year olds, and I hate it with a white hot passion.

And Wraith talks down to literally everything around her. She might not be outright arrogant, but she definitely has a major case of main character syndrome.

[–] Crunchypotat77@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah that's what. Mirage isn't edgy. He's insecure making as cocky. There are layers to his personality.

Wraith comes off as harsh, but she's had a rough life.

I agree that some of the kill quips don't match their personalities at times.

[–] MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

It doesn't matter what the underlying reasons for their personalities are lore-wise, if none of that comes through to a casual player.

One of my favorite legends is Horizon, but she doesn't have a single quip that matches who she is and isn't a cringy gamer-burn.

As fucked as overwatch has become, the pre-game character conversations are masterful in comparison to Apex. There's some of that, in squad mate thank-yous, but even that stuff is written to be adversarial 75% of the time.

Why!? It's a squad based game, but most of the charachters can't keep it to themselves how they're only co-operating with each other for the most selfish of reasons!

Mirage has joined the chat.

This is one of those that might be ok coming from a trusted person, but people I'm not that close to are absolutely not welcome in my personal space lol

[–] Roundcat@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

Same. If its someone I know well enough, them just being their is one of the most comforting things. Otherwise I go into masking mode, and get super exhausted.

[–] blanketswithsmallpox@kbin.social 8 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I didn't give you permission to touch me either thanks.

[–] Agamemnon@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Agreed for anyone but the closest of friends.

But I figured, they must already be good friends, when the follow-up question to the first "No" played out as pictured and actually wasn't the socially standardized and personally dreaded: "Oh, what's wrong? Tell me everything right now!"

Idk... but I'd probably grant silent back2back leaning permission to anyone being that considerate.

Hard agree. Contextually as being decent to good friends it's hard not to give it a pass. I know a few who absolutely loathe people in their space even on the best intentions though lol.

I think if I was depressed I would allow it.
