I am half way done with mine, which means I only have 3/4 left to write, then I will be 90% done.

[–] MrEff@lemmy.world 16 points 6 months ago

I never felt so more attacked, but also related to at the same time.

And the kicker is that once you're done you are sick of your field and end up doing something completely unrelated, where the fact that you even got that title goes unnoticed

French Patisserie is my new goal for realz.

I'm unironically getting my masters in bakery technology and it's a shithole like no other.

Academia has the way of ruining everything for you. Even sweet warm croissants.

[–] EddyNottingham@lemmy.ml 1 points 6 months ago (1 children)

That's the saddest thing I've heard today 🙁

I think I need a croissant.

I'm gonna go get a croissant 🙂

[–] Allero@lemmy.today 1 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (1 children)

Have a nice one!

But remember it was sweat and tears of the people who made it possible. Unless you come to a one-of-a-kind artisan bakery, your croissant is almost certainly made on the factory, very likely in the night shift, delivered as refrigerated/frozen semi-finished product, and put into oven in the place you consider "bakery" by the angry people who had to get up at 4am to do it for the minimum wage.

[–] EddyNottingham@lemmy.ml 1 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I'm lucky to have 6 artisan bakeries within walking distance!

[–] Allero@lemmy.today 1 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Most likely, they aren't artisan :D

Unless you're French, that is. I'd sell my soul for a good French baguette right now.

[–] EddyNottingham@lemmy.ml 2 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Haha, yes I live in France 😉 I have one I go to for baguettes, one for rye bread and cookies, one for "tarte au citron" 😍🍪🥖 I'd happily teleport a fresh baguette to you if I could!

My partner did this. While studying you can see how political academia is, and the sort of people who do well in it.

Not that corporate work is any different lol

[–] Ibaudia@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago

This was me with my MBA I got for human resources. Ended up in IT.

[–] rustyfish@lemmy.world 35 points 6 months ago

A thesis is not there to be written. It is there to be stressed about.

[–] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 33 points 6 months ago (2 children)

...and no one evvver read it..

[–] RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de 22 points 6 months ago (2 children)

That's not true! That's not true at all!

I had a colleague proofread it and my PI also read it once... probably.

[–] drail@fedia.io 6 points 6 months ago

My boss read the first chapter I turned in, decided I know what I am doing, gave me some basic feedback, and has completely checked out since then lol.

[–] FinalRemix@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago (1 children)

You had colleagues with the time to proofread yours?! Lucky...

[–] weariedfae@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago

Thank god. I cannot verify the quality of that trash based on my mental state by the time it was over. I hope no one ever reads mine.

Or at least someday I hope to overcome the PTSD and be able to read it again. In an ideal world I'd like to release an updated version/errata.

Guys, I put GW and SW instead of GP and SP and it makes me die inside.

[–] KillingTimeItself@lemmy.dbzer0.com 21 points 6 months ago

don't worry guys, it's ok, they just have to write the thesis, that's it.

[–] cabron_offsets@lemmy.world 15 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (2 children)

lol bruh. I couldn’t get my job without my PhD because of bullshit elitism, but fuck if I give a damn about 1-electron transfers n shit. I make money by handling money and writing code. Worked out handsomely for me.

Like Nas says: go legit. Believe in yoself. Live the life you deserve.

[–] hinterlufer@lemmy.world 17 points 6 months ago (2 children)

As someone in an important position once said to me, having a PhD shows that you have frustration tolerance.

[–] Fuck_u_spez_@sh.itjust.works 6 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I don't have an advanced degree but that's higher education in general, isn't it? Just a bunch of hoops to jump through for the sole purpose of proving that you're willing and able to jump through hoops. And yet nobody has ever asked to see my diploma in 20+ years of working.

[–] FinalRemix@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago

And you could be doing fine, but still get kicked out due to politics, your PI getting canned, etc.... ugh.

[–] veganpizza69@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

This angle would be akin to saying that a PhD degree is like having tattoos and other body modifications on your brain and probably on your cardiac muscle.

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 12 points 6 months ago

I don't understand why college students stress out so much over writing a single sentence. 🤷🏻‍♂️ ^/s^

[–] rab@lemmy.ca 11 points 6 months ago

I had coworker slip on ice and break her laptop containing the only copy of her 90% complete thesis

She spent an additional 10 grand sending it in for data recovery and was not successful in retrieving it

Trve story

(echoing) Master's ooooouuuut- ooouuut- oouutt

[–] Shotgun_Alice@lemmy.world 5 points 6 months ago (1 children)

When I did my master’s thesis and it was like this non stop for that last year. In my thesis defense I could tell my advisors wanted me to do another year of work, I was so absolutely done at that point, I didn’t want to spend another cent on that degree and really was ready to walk away from it. They gave me a passing grade anyways because it looks better for the school to have me graduate in their statistics then if I had quit.

[–] Wasgaytsiedasan@feddit.de 1 points 6 months ago (1 children)

One year for a master thesis? Don't you do it in 5 months typically?

[–] Shotgun_Alice@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago

Sorry I must have structured the sentence in a confusing way, I did a full masters program, but they had doubts about the work I did and I could tell they wanted me to spend another year in the program, so two more semesters, how ever many months that is. I don’t know what part of the world you’re from or how you upper level schools structure their “year” but yeah two more semesters. I think they’re like four months each semester, so yeah that long. I was just done at that point and didn’t want to fork out any more money, honestly if they decided not to award my degree I would have been fine with that decision too, they just didn’t want it on paper someone “flunking” out of their degree program.

[–] Allero@lemmy.today 4 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Unite, my dear, for soon we all, coming from all places on the globe, are gonna become...

MASTERS OF THE WORLD

[–] SoleInvictus@lemmy.blahaj.zone -2 points 6 months ago

Do what I did: never write it! I put as much on my resume but not once has an employer verified my education. I could put anything!
