Nice. I remember the insane graphics this game provided when I finally got my 3dfx Voodoo2 running properly back in 1998. Looking forward to a modern overhaul.

I well remember playing this with software rendering initially, then getting a Geforce 2 and being blown away with the difference.

I remember playing multiplayer quake 2 with a John McClane skin complete with sounds.

Good times

Although I miss the original setting of Quake, in a medieval fantasy world with zombies, grenadiers and evil knights, I also enjoyed Quake 2 and how you went back and forth across some scenarios... and the ambient sound, very oppressing.

Is this all? Just re-release the old quake 2 and adding some basic light/shadow and anisotropy? They could at least add specular and normal texture maps, like Quake 2 RTX did.

I agree. I know you're getting downvoted, but these slight graphical upgrades don't really justify an entire new re-release. I was actually hoping for something like they did with the Halo enhanced editions, allowing you to switch between the new shiny graphics and the original graphics. They could certainly keep the same engine and game feel, but to make a big deal about what could have essentially been a mod to the original game seems disingenuous on their part.

it's a free update if you already own it on Steam. so not really a 're-release'

and there's much more than just the new graphics. this article details it: https://www.pcgamer.com/quake-2-remaster-release/

  • The original campaign, expansions The Reckoning and Ground Zero, the N64 levels, and the new Call of the Machine episode
  • Toggleable graphics upgrades that are stylistically consistent with the original (muzzle flashes, fog, improved lighting, that kind of thing)
  • Loads of accessibility features
  • Split-screen and online multiplayer
  • Co-op, deathmatch, team deathmatch, and CTF, with lots of built-in mutators
  • PC/console crossplay
  • Support for custom Quake 2 maps, new and old
  • Support for new mods, or old ones that have been updated for this 64-bit version
  • Improved AI enemies and bots

Amazing to see. Going to replay the crap out of this.

Now do quake 3 arena.

[–] Reunio@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

If we could get arena shooters to come back to the fore properly that would be ace!

Enough of this hero shooter nonsense, I just want to frag someone.
