This is a bug that has existed for a while. You can go to GitHub and upvote the relevant issue.

It is very mathy but here's the algo they use to rank content: https://join-lemmy.org/docs/en/contributors/07-ranking-algo.html

Might explain a bit of why things are at certain places for a time.

I noticed this as well, it makes the web app almost unusable when sorting by all.

It doesn't happen on the mobile app (Jerboa) tho.

Go to settings - Sort type - choose Hot (or anything other than active)
