Yeah, it should work fine. If using it for single track it might feel a bit weird, but have heard of people successfully mountain biking on even narrower rims with 2.1" tires.

Thanks for the reply. Just checked with a caliper, and the RM-17 is just a name. The actual inner width is 16.2! Found scans of the 1990 Araya catalog, and they suggest 1.5-2.0 for these rims. I'm going to try the GKs out, and if I don't like the feel go smaller.
