The argument it's a different game mode and not DLC is kinda dumb.

You bought the version that guarantees all DLC for the game forever and now they bring out something and say oh no this isn't DLC it's a different mode. They sure as shit aren't posting the disk out to people so it's still Dowoladable content

[–] Guntrigger@sopuli.xyz 50 points 7 months ago (1 children)

It's absolutely just wordplay so they can scam more money out of consumers. Arguably Arena could be considered DLC also, but that's even more of a seperate mode than this. It sounds like there's now just progression tied to the existing offline raid mode, which is obviously just trying to capitalise on the increasing popularity of SP Tarkov.

I don't think it's really possible for them to shut down SP Tarkov (due to BattleState's immeasurable copyright breaches themselves), so it's wild if anyone actually pays $250 for this.

[–] mergingapples@lemmy.world 14 points 7 months ago (1 children)

They got a ton of copyright breaches? Oh tell me more!

[–] Guntrigger@sopuli.xyz 19 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Basically all of the guns in there are real world manufacturers and models without their names changed and not licensed. Aside from that pretty much every item is a branding rip off with one letter changed. For example "Slickers" bars that look identical to Snickers and "Tarcola", which is a copy paste of a Coke can. Even body armour, bags, cases are all identically modelled on real world products.

Because they are based entirely in Russia and only sell directly through their website, no companies can really come after them. I don't see them starting up legal battles to secure their own IP in the US or EU without a shitstorm coming down on them.

[–] Jax@sh.itjust.works 4 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (1 children)

They're headquartered in London.

Parody is typically protected.

BSG absolutely pays for licenses, many of the gun manufacturers in Tarkov give devs the rights to use their guns for free - it's literally advertising.

I know for a fact they pay for the Glock licenses, Glock will absolutely burn you alive for stepping on their toes. Same goes for HK.

Your comment is nice headcanon, but no.

Edit: downvoting me doesn't make you right, trog.

[–] Guntrigger@sopuli.xyz 1 points 7 months ago

Interesting, I didn't know that about the guns. My info is probably a little bit old because they certainly didn't start off all licenced up and ready to go and there was some debate about it in the community years ago.

FYI: I just downvoted you now because you had already made an edit to insult me for something I didn't do before I even read your comment for the first time. Unhinged.

[–] RandomStickman@kbin.run 51 points 7 months ago (1 children)

An entire mode locked behind a $100-250 paywall? I'm so glad I never got in to the game. I was close.

[–] Guntrigger@sopuli.xyz 8 points 7 months ago (1 children)

It is still a pretty great game. I only ever played with the cheapest standard edition and had no problems.

I still do have some regrets about who I have given my money to, but there is no other game quite like it and a lot of industry giants and indies have tried (and are still trying) to emulate it without success.

[–] ShadowRam@fedia.io -5 points 7 months ago (3 children)

lot of industry giants and indies have tried

No they haven't.

It's not a hard formula.

Instanced maps, loot, use loot to upgrade outside of instance in a way that helps your next playthough, Player has experience points and leveling of skills,

No other game does this, and any industry giants that claim to have tried have missed 1 of the 4 core elements.

[–] Phanatik@kbin.social 33 points 7 months ago (3 children)

It amazes me that people don't notice this is the exact same formula for roguelikes.

[–] GoodEye8@lemm.ee 6 points 7 months ago (1 children)

The obligatory "I think you meant rogue-lite not rogue-like" because the roguelike community is very pedantic about their definition and Tarkov literally could not be a roguelike.

But it's also not the EXACT same formula as a roguelite. For starters there are no PVP roguelites so the entire PVP aspect of the game is already huge deviation from that the formula. Secondly death is a mechanic in roguelites. You die, you made some progress, you start again usually with some new twist of the new character. In Tarkov death is a failure state. Sure, you can make some progress in some quests or hideout upgrades, but overall you will lose progress whenever you die (lost equipment, lost quest items that you took into raid, cost of healing up, cost of getting new equipment etc). Void Bastards is the closest roguelite that is comparable to Tarkov. There are a lot of similarities there, but they're also very different in many ways.

Not to mention the Tarkov we are can currently play (and what most likely will also be the final release) is also a very different game compared to what Nikita (game director) originally envisioned. What Nikita envisioned was something between the current Tarkov and STALKER games. Not in the mutants and anomalies way but in the way of how the maps connect and how you need to actually traverse "the world" to do the quests. If you've played Tarkov enough you know that the maps already connect, some extractions literally tell you how they connect to the other areas and you can see the same landmarks on different maps. But it's becoming clearer that they're not actually going to finalize the original vision, they're going to make the ending and then push the game out the door.

[–] Phanatik@kbin.social 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I always mix up roguelike and roguelite so thank you for explaining.

I don't know how they plan to manage the Hideout if they want to have this open world.

[–] GoodEye8@lemm.ee 1 points 7 months ago

Nobody knows exactly how it would've worked, but people speculated that the bunker extracts would connect to the hideout.

[–] Webster@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago

I love Roguelikes. I love FPS. Tarkov is my favorite game, but damn does it squander it's potential.

[–] Guntrigger@sopuli.xyz 1 points 7 months ago (2 children)

It is, but just because two games follow the same formula for their gameplay loop doesn't mean they will be equally good. There are a LOT of other factors.

Does Warzone's DMZ mode fail at any of these?

[–] Guntrigger@sopuli.xyz 2 points 7 months ago

You'rr right it has all of them. It's one of the closer attempts, but to me the general feeling is not quite the same.

Tarkov always gave me the same vibe as old DayZ mod. Slow, deliberate, anxiety inducing gameplay where death matters and the gameplay can vary massively from game to game.

By making it a less "hard-core" experience like DMZ, it doesn't feel as high stakes and that tension is less. But that's partially just because of the COD gameplay mechanics.

That feeling is more important than the "formula" posted above.

[–] ShadowRam@fedia.io 1 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Yes.

There's no looting.

There's no upgrades outside of the instance.

There's no upgrading of players skills.

It just about fails all of them.

Taking weapons out and back in, doesn't count. There's no looting (of non-combat items)

[–] Running_Nose@lemmynsfw.com 3 points 7 months ago

Hunt Showdown comes pretty close imo.

Coming from someone who has never played Tarkov, lol.

[–] joelfromaus@aussie.zone 38 points 7 months ago (2 children)

Regarding how bad BattleState Games are; I changed my email address a while back and because I have no access to the old address I cannot update my BSG account to the new address. I’ve spent months in contact with BSG and supplied them with everything short of a DNA sample but they will not update the address.

I can still access the account, but not the game, and there is no way to update the address without going through BSG support. I’ve also spoken out on their forums amongst others with the same issue with no response from BSG.

I bought 2 Edge of Darkness editions (one for my ex-partner) and yet I cannot play the game at all. Fuck BSG, good game, dogshit company.

[–] LethargyTheGhost@lemmy.world 11 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Hey so I was actually able to get them to change my email last year. I sent them an email telling them I was losing my email, as in it was getting completely deleted. I then sent them an email showing gmail picture showing the email address in the login text box and it showing "couldn't find this account"

I wont lie, I did this by putting in a fake email, hitting enter, then replacing it with my real email. It was a huge fucking hassle, took a year, and required lying, but this is what got it done.

[–] joelfromaus@aussie.zone 2 points 7 months ago

That’s how my requests started as well. Then they needed the email receipt and confirmation of the email address that it was sent to (which I have), then multiple types of confirmation that the old email couldn’t be reactivated/accessed, then in-game information like nickname (which I changed each wipe so I don’t know), then username (?) and confirmation from my bank of payment being sent. That’s where I’m stuck. That’s like 5 years ago and the two payment methods I possibly used at the time don’t have records for it (very long story).

That’s the point where I gave up. The game isn’t worth spending any more of my time haggling with BSG support or sifting through paperwork and emails.

[–] azalty@jlai.lu 5 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I feel like they use the email address as a primary key in their database and need to copy an account and duplicate it to set it to another mail.

It’s the only possible explanation I see as to why they don’t let us do it.

[–] joelfromaus@aussie.zone 3 points 7 months ago

It’s either that or something to do with combating RMT and multiple account creation for hacking accounts.

Either way it’s funny that out of the few companies I’ve had to go through this with only BSG has been so painful.

[–] Lobreeze@lemmy.world 33 points 7 months ago (2 children)

Gray Zone Warfare on steam.

Not in early access yet but early alpha gameplay has this as a better looking tarkov with a persistent map.

Same idea same looking ui and everything.

Best part, it's not Battlestate Games

[–] Land_Strider@lemmy.world 9 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (1 children)

Hunt: Showdown is also another good option. It is not the same timeline, it is set in 1890's Florida swamps, but as a Battle Royale without region limitations or anything forcing combat, it is a great game to stalk your prey or go for close quarters combat. Ballistics and medical system is rather simpler yet still very effective in how encounters go down, and also no inventory hassle.

Slower fire rate, no extraction point campers, all kinds of weirdos doing all kinds of shit that makes no sense but make every round somewhat unique and memorable. 500 hours in with 2 buddies in a year and the game still feels fresh without shoving new weapons down every month.

Also no progression hassle. 99% of the weapons can be utilized on every round, just gotta consider how you play with them and how to play against other hunters' weapons.

It is not something that can scratch the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. itch, though.

[–] Deadwig@lemmy.world 3 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Hunt is fantastic. I've played 250 hours of this and never got bored enough to quit. Other games I used to love, like Siege, got kinda boring by about the same playtime. Hunt definitely feels somewhat unique each match, and it keeps it interesting!

[–] priapus@sh.itjust.works 3 points 7 months ago

Gray Zone Warfare looks really cool and has similarities to tarkov, but the overall gameplay loop is pretty different. It's a much slower and less PVP focused game.

Arena Breakout: Infinite is an upcoming game that is much more similar to Tarkov

[–] fuzzyspudkiss@midwest.social 19 points 7 months ago (2 children)

The game scratches an itch for me that no other video games has ever been able to. Really sucks that the devs are awful. Really hoping a good replacement game comes out sometime.

[–] Webster@lemmy.world 10 points 7 months ago

Seriously. I've never had a game pump adrenaline for me like Tarkov. Combined with the fact that over hundreds of hours of play in a wipe, I still feel like I'm making long term progress in every raid is just addicting. The core gameplay loop is just fun.

Give me a good dev who respect their players who can give me these things and there goes years of my gaming time.

[–] golden_zealot@lemmy.ml 3 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Single player, but stalker Gamma scratches that same itch for me better than tarkov ever could and its completely free.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 3 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Ooo, thanks for the recommendation

[–] golden_zealot@lemmy.ml 2 points 7 months ago

No worries. The cost here is disk space as GAMMA is built on top of the free Anomaly game. In total, it looks like its costing me 89.3 GB of storage on an NVME, and they do recommend an SSD at least for the games (that total includes S.T.A.L.K.E.R Anomaly, and GAMMA).

Anomaly can be obtained here https://www.moddb.com/mods/stalker-anomaly, and I believe you can get GAMMA from this discord https://discord.com/invite/stalker-gamma.

Follow the install instructions on the GAMMA discord when it comes to both Anomaly and GAMMA, they are pretty straight forward, and they have free support!

I think you would be impressed by the AI, it is some of the best enemy AI I have ever experienced. They peek corners just like a player would. The other day when I was playing, an enemy peeked a corner in front of me, shot me and immediately went back behind the corner. I walked into the building that they had peeked around and looked out of a window to see if I could spot them. The AI had backed up behind cover and was holding the corner they had peeked, not moving at all.

Never seen AI that smart in any game in my life, if I had walked around that corner, I would have been dead!

While the game is unforgiving and there is a fairly steep learning curve, it is one of the most incredible games I have played in my life, again, for free!

Let me know how it goes if you give it a shot :)

[–] NOOBMASTER@lemmy.ml 15 points 7 months ago (1 children)

the game is full of cheaters anyway. just like every other online game...

[–] CptEnder@lemmy.world 17 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

While you are correct, eft is orders of magnitudes worse with cheaters than any other game. Russian devs transparently dgaf. It's actually kinda impressive.

[–] priapus@sh.itjust.works 15 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Wow, those bonuses are way more pay to win than the previous ones. Really shitty of them to release this.

[–] jacobc436@lemmy.ml 7 points 7 months ago

The previous ones were all attainable without paying and any weapons you got as part of the bundle, while nice, often did not last long unless you were good at the game.

[–] originalfrozenbanana@lemm.ee 13 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

This makes me laugh so hard.

EFT fanboys shelled out big bucks ($140) to buy the edge of darkness edition that promised a bunch of stuff - including coveted gamma containers that gave you expanded inventory space. Importantly, it promised free access to ALL future DLC. It was removed from the store in January without any reason.

Today Battlestate Games announced the “Unheard of Edition” for $250 that gives increased rep gain, inventory space, items and loot, and access to offline progression and PvE modes. It gives you special pockets that carry full mags. It gives you unique items and weapons. It is so clearly pay to win and so expensive that even the EFT fanboys are pissed. And people who bought EfD have the pleasure of buying this new version like everyone else because it’s not a DLC - it’s a new game mode, apparently.

BSG responded to the backlash in the healthiest way possible: by doubling down. Today, after a competitor (Arena Unleashed or some shit) mocked them on Twitter, BSG retweeted them - giving them more free advertising than they’ve had in any form. Absolutely incredible to watch this shitty company implode.

The most incredible thing is that all of this is bullshit. BSG has convinced people that playing Tetris with their inventory is actually Gritty Realism to the extent that they think their players will pay $250 to get an 8x8 box and bigger pockets. Next thing you know, you’ll be able to pay a mere $300 to have an in-game map and vendors that consistently sell things.

[–] Immersive_Matthew@sh.itjust.works 13 points 7 months ago

Sure…be mad at the developer, but also be mad at the fools paying $250 to win as the only reason it is offered, is because people are buying.

[–] meteokr@community.adiquaints.moe 8 points 7 months ago (4 children)

Anyone know the status of the single player tarkov project? Been a while since I looked at it, and I'd like to bring it into the discussion when the parent company is threatening the community essentially.

[–] Guntrigger@sopuli.xyz 10 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

They just updated it to the latest patch about a month ago, which is much better in a lot of ways (big recoil/weapon handling improvements namely). It's in a really great state to be honest, I tried it out when I got bored of the current wipe a couple of months ago befpre the update and was really impressed.

I havent checked on it for a couple of weeks, but the mod makers were updating their mods to he compatible pretty fast. You can basically customise the entire experience with what's out already.

https://sp-tarkov.com/

[–] blindbunny@lemmy.ml 9 points 7 months ago

Just play stalker anomaly/gamma... Fuck this company

[–] fuzzyspudkiss@midwest.social 7 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Still alive and going strong, only takes a couple weeks for them to update to the latest version of tarkov live. Some people even like to stay in tarkov.

[–] Guntrigger@sopuli.xyz 2 points 7 months ago

Anyone who values PvP combat will always go back.

There are a lot of advantages to the SP version though. Zero cheaters, customizablity and loading times cut down to about 1/10th of the time of live are the big ones.

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 5 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Into the Radius is basically single player Tarkov. But I think it's also VR only.

[–] Console_Modder@sh.itjust.works 3 points 7 months ago

Yeah, Into The Radius is VR only. Gotta play the STALKER mods like Call of Chernobyl, Misery, Gamma, or Anomaly for a similar non-VR experience. Maybe even Metro Exodus

[–] SRo@lemmy.dbzer0.com -4 points 7 months ago (1 children)

What do you expect from russian fucks

[–] LethargyTheGhost@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago (1 children)
[–] threeduck@aussie.zone 0 points 7 months ago

wait is that what your expect from them?
