Depictions of couples sharing a bed especially on TV for example is a relatively recent phenomenon. It was considered polite to provide separate beds

Old TV shows made separate beds a thing for appeals to protestant morality. Prior to that separate beds was a rich people thing. Communal sleeping had been the long standing norm. Commoners didn't have the space/money typical for multiple beds or even multiple sleeping quarters to make separate sleeping possible. https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20240111-sleep-the-lost-ancient-practise-of-sharing-a-bed
