Does the average russian citizen have any idea of the losses I wonder
They must do at least anecdotally. Enough people have died at this point for them to be aware it's happening a lot.
I am not sure about that. If you take the Ukrainian figure of +200k dead, that would mean 0.14% of the Russian population died in that war. In Germany, 0.11% of the population died from covid, but fortunately I didn't know anyone from that.
Edit: some russian troll is downvoting all comments here
I thought the 200K number was dead and wounded and somewhere just under 50K were killed?
The ridiculously skewed numbers that the Russian MoD releases are generally for domestic consumption, so the average Russian has no idea how badly they're getting their asses kicked. That said, as fathers, sons and brothers fail to return home, the true picture will soon become apparent.
Russia has been trying to keep most of the fighting to prisoners and minorities. So if you don't know someone in either group you might not be aware.
I'm pretty sure the average Russian citizen does not care about the war whatsoever, especially if they are not in immediate danger of being drafted.
