A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. A showerthought should offer a unique perspective on an ordinary part of life.

My wife does this all the time, and if I don't check before I spritz I get an unexpected ball splash.

NSFW for potential topic sensitivity I guess.

Building assets (and options) for retirement is also a basic need. Owning another property, at a minimum, is just a hedge against inflation.

If you have any bright ideas to supplement my retirement in addition to my savings and other financial investments, I am all ears.

I highly doubt that you are going to support me.

No, you've already arranged to have someone else support you.

Feel free to invest in anything that doesn't extract wealth from people trying to fulfill their basic needs.

What? I don't rent. I tried that once and the person caused thousands of dollars in damages. We were renting as a favor and were charging half of what we should have.

When you have a point or a valid argument, let me know.

So you're sitting on an empty house while prices skyrocket and 650,000 Americans go unhoused.

Yes. I may move back there one day, actually. I have worked hard to support a family and gather resources for myself. If you consider that evil, so be it. I can't please everyone.

You're the reason we can't have nice things.

[–] remotelove@lemmy.ca 0 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Do you want a nice thing? Is there something you need or something that will improve your life right now?

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

It's telling that you're only able to conceive of personal wants, and not societal needs.

And I'm telling you that it's expensive to retire. If I can't provide for myself, without the assistance of the state or my kids, what use will I be to anyone else? Do you have magical ways to pay for medical bills and college?

If you think I own two massive homes, a huge garage and 6 BMWs, you are mistaken. It's all fairly modest.

This conversation started by me telling people how to maintain a toilet and not get poisoned by sewer gas. The fact that I do my own maintenance should at least speak volumes.

If you actually have something meaningful to contribute or meaningful advice to give, I'm listening. If you are just going to hurl insults and make yourself look stupid, you go right ahead.

And I'm informing you that you're hurting other people by "investing" in real estate. You have plenty of other options available that don't make housing less affordable than others. Stop making up bizarre shit that you think I imagine.

Home ownership is complex. Life is complex. Both require difficult choices and decisions. I am thinking about retirement now and some rando on the interwebs wants to call me evil because I am making plans for he future? There is no possible way you understand the entire scope of my life, the choices I make or why I even have that house still.

Families that own one or two houses aren't the issue. Banks and private companies that own thousands of houses are the main issue and you are failing to realize that. I don't even own my homes, technically. I am still paying two mortgages, after all.

Your hate and discontent is misdirected. You are making assumptions about things you don't understand, you can't understand or don't want to understand.

You haven't answered any of my questions either. Are you in need of something? Are you a financial expert? Do you understand the costs of living? Do you pay medical bills? Do you pay for kids medical bills? Do you have a job? Can you eat? Cars? Rent?

Until you give me details about yourself, I can't help but imagine that you are way out of your league when it comes to managing money and planning for the future. I have nothing but comments about how I am an evil person to work with here.....

If you think you are changing the world by preaching to others who are just living life too, you aren't. Can you speak with full thoughts and not with short quips or uninformative insults?

Edit: Eh. Don't worry about responding. Your entire profile is just one-liners and you rarely have actual discussions. Should have blocked you a few comments ago, TBH.
