I like our new Samsung dryer as it plays a tune when it's done plus I get a notification on my phone. When our washing machine eventually breaks I want one that has similar features so it's easier to keep track.

I wish I had that old style buzzer you could hear throughout the house - I can’t hear that little tune unless I’m already in the basement.

At the time, phone notification was like $300 /machine more, which seemed excessive (although I’m tempted to do a weekend project to build something)

So realistically, the innovation I most appreciate is accurate time estimate and a digital display. I just set a timer wherever I am

Home assistant is gonna be your friend. Get a power sensor or vibration sensor and set up an automation to detect when the machine is running and then when done it'll remind you (as often as you need) until you dismiss the reminder or click a button or whatever you need.

Yes, I use HA and have read where people share about using a power monitor to know when the machines are done.

However this is the first time anyone brought up a vibration sensor. What a cool idea! I’ve never looked into such thing: are there devices you’d recommend or is this more of a build your own ?

Devices exist for vibration sensing. They are often used for intrusion detection to put on doors and windows but can just as well be used on a washing machine. I have not tried any of them so can't talk about how well the quality is on them. Otherwise if you are comfortable using esp home it sound be really easy to build something with almost any cheap accelerometer.

Ah yes ours just gives a notification when it's ready. Plus the display will always show how much time is left and it'll show up in the app as well. If its not dry yet it'll adjust the timer but it always gives an estimate on when it should be finished (time left as well as the expected time it will be finished).

I can hear the tune from the other room, but I like the notification on my phone as a bonus!
