It's funny how polarising this is. Absolutely valid opinion, but I couldn't disagree more strongly. I thought it was a really great way of highlighting that actually all these characters are a result of their trauma and not necessarily good or bad, but flawed humans with realistic motivations.
Clearly it was a big risk though because many people share your view.
I liked the game. Don't think it was bad, didn't think it was great. Solid 7/10 for me and nothing compared to the first game.
I'm really looking forward to the HBO adaptation though; my biggest problem with TLOU2 was that they tried very hard to make me feel guilty about killing people/dogs/etc, when it is inherently fun to kill things in that game. You can't preach about how bad the cycle of violence is when they give you no choice to avoid said violence and have the best parts of the game be focused around sneaking about murdering things.
Always thought that TLOU2's story would work far better as a book/show where you are passively watching, not actively participating.
This is also exactly why people hated the treatment of Joel in 2. You spend an entire game forced into his shoes/role of “hero” and it really affects your perception of him. With player agency removed, I think the show had more breathing room to portray the dark side of his actions.
