Didn't they stop supporting the 3DS in the nintendo store? Does the switch have any backwards compatibility? At this point you could probably play those games on an emulator. I don't think a 3ds would be worth it but if the price is reasonable and it's something you want to do then just go for it.
3ds is one of the easiest machines to hack. Takes 15 minutes to 2 hours, depending on what firmware it is running, but the modding community is pretty big right now for it. There is hShop (replicates eShop but everything is free and you can download homebrew and custom stuff there aswell), CTGP 7 is a mod to mk7 which adds lots of new levels, online play, game modes, items and character skins. Lots of other cool things aswell, those were just at the top of my head
