What’s modern gaming convention that should no longer be practiced?

Maybe not a "standard," but I've noticed a huge rise in open-ended narratives. Dwarf Fortress, Wildermyth, and Stellaris are all fantastic games, but sometimes I really want something with a solid narrative and a definitive end where the game is really over. That style of narrative seems to have almost completely disappeared from gaming, in both the AAA and Indie scenes.
