It isn’t exactly “modern” but I think game devs putting a patent on gaming mechanics is really dumb. I understand why it is done but I still hate it.

Warner Bros has a patent on the nemesis system found in the 'Middle Earth: Shadow of' series. That's probably the most popular example
Namco also patented loading screen games. That patent expired in 2015 though
iirc the devs of crazy taxi patented the floating pointing arrow
Yes, the nemesis system could’ve been used and made some great games. Now WB has a parent and the next game we will get to use it in is Wonder Woman.
