Should be the same as independent or craft breweries in the US. There's a legal definition to do with amount of beer produced and sold, which if goes above a certain threshold it can't legally be called craft beer. Common sense the same goes for games, if it's a large company making huge amounts of money then it clearly isn't independent. Though large companies want to have that prestige and good will that goes towards smaller companies, so will do things like set up fake smaller companies and pretend they're independent. Don't be a fool and fall for it.
