Bit of an explanation as to what prompted me to make this post: I recently played through Sniper Ghost Warrior: Contracts 1 and 2 and I just felt off. I've slaughtered hundreds of innocents for my amusement in games like Fallout and TES, I play through No Russian with a grin, but for some reason, I refrain from killing bad guys in SGW? The first one has you hunt down Russian oligarchs and war criminals, while the second one is about Middle Eastern terrorists and this is the game where I feel bad about killing? There's just something about the soldiers talking about their daily problems like making no money, uncomfortable boots and sweating too much, or showing eachother pictures of their dogs, not to mention the absolute horror when you've got a knife against their throat or when they find a body. I hope this isn't weird, but I've never experienced remorse for killing a video game enemy, and I've played a lot of different games. I'd like to hear about your experiences, and which games do a good job humanising common enemies, the concept intrigues me.

BG3 playing the Dark Urge. Thought I could stomach it because it was just a game, but found myself actually distressed after killing so many innocents.

They make it worse by gating one of the best items in the game early on but you have to agree to…gods, the camp scenes 😭

The first one can have a different victim if you knock her out in the Grove before she's supposed to visit. Save often, friends!

This was my second play though and I thought, “How bad can it be?” Yeah, after that scene, it can be pretty bad. In my table top D&D game, I also have a hard time playing evil characters. I should’ve used that as a litmus for playing Durge.

You can choose to sacrifice a particular edible Cleric instead

Not really but at least your friends can live

Idk why but I feel is though I put my own persona on my bg3 character. Always tried to do everything “right” in whatever I did.

Yeah, that first one was so surprising at camp. And then afterwards my character is like "yeah, that was me. Crazy night huh?" The fact that I could make my character be so nonchalant about it was awesome and chilling at the same time. And then everyone was basically fine with it. What? Someone get mad please!

had to scroll too far to see this, i had to restart with a vanilla character lol

I'm right at the end of the game, and I picked the Dark Urge. I played it fighting the urge, almost always successfully.

I'm conflicted between:

  • urge again, but full on kill everything evil

  • a different character entirely, with a different class

  • fuck all that, this game is way too long.

Haven't done Dark Urge yet, but I did side with Minthara on a second playthrough... that was hard...

“At least you’ll die before they find the children”

You do realize you can resist the Urge, right? The payoff in Act 3 is incredible.
