I went to Knoxville, TN for Thanksgiving today and brought my 4s with me and it's getting 2 bars average. Is it supposed to still get service? Before when I made calls it would fail, but now it calls American Roaming. It's a Verizon phone with an old SIM card, but it still gets a few bars when I take the SIM card out. Anyone know why? Verizon's 3g networks shut down a while ago.

The "1x" indicates you are connecting to an even older CDMA network... pre-3G.

Would it be 2g or in between 2g and 3g?

No, 1x was (barely) considered 3G when it launched. The 2G version of CDMA only supported Circuit Switched data, which was basically the cellular version of dialup (as in you literally had to dial up an ISP to be connected, and it was tethering-only to a laptop).
