I do this all the time but never realized that I don’t know what it’s called until now and now I have to know.

This is “Quitting” and app on iOS. It is absolutely not required and not even recommended, unless you are having app issues. Apple Support The iOS system is designed to have all the apps sitting here in the multi-tasking view in a frozen state. When you swipe up and fully quit the app, it will actually use more processing power and in consequence, more battery to reopen from the fully closed state.
