I don't know what the russians expected from an attack like that. Out in the open, driving in a neat line to the area which is well within Ukrainian artillery range with drones to assist aiming. You'd need a lot more equipment, air assist, smoke screens and a ton of other equipment and planning + different teams working together to even have a chance to succeed an attack like that.
There's a quote from months ago from someone Ukrainian, something along the lines "we're lucky that they're so stupid". That still seems to be the case, but from my armchair general position that seems just so ridiculous that no one in russia stops to think for a minute if there was a better way.
That of course doesn't bother me at all that they waste resources like that, the sooner they're depleted enough that they can't keep on fighting the better and Ukraine can finally start to rebuild and move towards democratic and prosperous future.
