I've noticed today that world@lemmy.world hasn't had any new posts or comments for about a day now.

However when I go to https://lemmy.world/c/world in the browser there's way more activity.

Could we merely not take over the running of the instance and fund the server costs through patreon?

I don't think we could, Tom is either self hosting it or hosting it with a provider with his private account details. Unless he gives us those details so we can migrate it away to a different host then I don't really see a way forward.

If Tom re-emerges he could appoint a number of admins and we could make sure funding is in place for the server costs. However, without him our only option would be to start a new instance.
