German energy giant RWE has begun dismantling a wind farm to make way for a further expansion of an open-pit lignite coal mine in the western region of North Rhine Westphalia.

I thought renewables were cheaper than coal. How is this possible?

It's the text in-between the two.

The text written by the OP is a rhetorical question about what I quoted, not a description. To read it you had to read the quoted text too, or decide to skip it for some reason.
