Well, that's a new one on me. Not sure I've seen government officials clashing with the police before... unless you count police attacking politicians during the George Floyd riots.

I think maybe it's because as I understand it in the US the police are more accountable to local government than in some other countries?

The police have a duty to protect the LGBT citizens from the protestors, even if one is the Mayor.
