I saw this and thought it cool, but worried about water ingress if I was to us it at home. Also no hookup to the existing bell wiring (though that wouldn't be hard to add).
Yeah that seems to be an issue as the camera hole isn't sealed. It's a first pass and I don't think it'd be too difficult to tweak the design to add rubber seals. Being able to use the existing wiring might need a more radical re-design but the beauty of an open project like that is that, if it's useful, it'll be improved upon.
wouldn't mid external power as long as it could ring the house bell, I would even be happy with a double throw button so that part was mechanical. I like graceful fallback for when I break my HA install (again).
That and external power are key - a good percentage of battery powered smart doorbells don't work at all. Having something running off the mains that triggers another mains powered bell means you have a working doorbell at all times.
