The dystopian evil standard allocated apartment that EVERYONE had and there was NO individuality

As opposed to the cheap dime-a-dozen housing that gets smacked up everywhere, rented for outrageous prices and god help you if you paint a cabinet or drill a hole in the wall - Goodbye deposit.
