Hello fellow Far Side fans!

About this community and how I post the comic strip… Many moons ago, I would ask my Dad to save the newspaper for me everyday so I could read my favorite comic strips and one of those was The Far Side. These days of course you find just about anything online including www.thefarside.com where they post several comics a day and I repost them here. Just to note, the date you see in my posts is not the initial release date, but the date they were posted on the website.

The Far Side is a single-panel comic created by Gary Larson and syndicated by Chronicle Features and then Universal Press Syndicate, which ran from December 31, 1979, to January 1, 1995 (when Larson retired as a cartoonist). Its surrealistic humor is often based on uncomfortable social situations, improbable events, an anthropomorphic view of the world, logical fallacies, impending bizarre disasters, (often twisted) references to proverbs, or the search for meaning in life… Read more: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Far_Side

This would be a controversial comic if it were released today, due to all of the controversy around the idea of vicious breeds.

Edit: Well, I tried to word my comment so that it would be about the comic and wouldn't elicit this sort of discussion, but I guess I failed.

It's not that they're vicious. Chihuahua's are vicious. It's that they can kill a child with a single bite in a single second of inattention. They're the sweetest dogs you can imagine and usually great with kids as well. It's the potential that makes them so dangerous.

I always hear the same thing. He's the sweetest dog ever. He would never hurt a fly.

And it's always true until one day it just isn't. My cousin's large dogs would always growl and threaten my husband (who is admittedly nervous around dogs). Every fucking holiday it was the same thing after one of the dogs corners him. "He never does this." Except every year, he does.

One of those dogs finally snapped one day. No humans were physically injured that day, but two people - including a young child had to witness it. We think she doesn't remember, thankfully.

very sad outcome for another petOne of their smaller dogs was attacked and killed by the Rottie. They had him put down as well after that.

I fully blame idiot cousin Jimmy and his idiot wife, but crap.

Is their bite strength 10x greater than other dogs? German Shepherds, Great Danes, etc are also big dogs used for guarding and police but you don't hear about them snapping and killing a kid. There has to be more to it than just their potential for damage...

No not necessarily, but fighter dogs don't let go. I've heard stories where they had to literally, full force kick a bulldog off of a cow or hit a bulldog with a shovel, repeatedly to make them let go of another dog to a point where the bulldog died form their injuries. Rottweilers are not a fighter breed though, so they don't do that. They're just equally intimidating looking, I guess.

We had to poke a pitbull mix in both eyes to get it to release my elderly mother’s dog after it jumped the 4 foot fence it’s owners thought was enough. And we were all right there having a cookout when it happened. It just wouldn’t let go. Even with 3 grown men holding it down, including the owner.
