We went opposite and didnt have anything really that personal like that. We did the barest decoration and no trinkets or anything but focused on the guests and their enjoyment. We did have a free bar (normal in my Indian culture but you supply alcohol yourself so much, much cheaper), and an Indian DJ and Irish band (for my wife). Everyone had a blast and still tell us it was the best wedding because they had a good time but also because it was different to other weddings. Being two different cultures let us pick and choose the best bits but it shows you don't have to follow trends to have a gold wedding.
Guess what I'm trying to say is don't worry about those websites and what you're expected to do. Focus on what you want to do and what your guests would enjoy (expect and enjoy being two different things that might not overlap!). Honestly, do you remember all the decorations, trinkets or small details from weddings you've been to?
It sounds like cats are important to you so those sound like great ideas but only if you both think so and not just following that advice.
It's just a prompt for the sub, so no worries the wedding is 100% authentic to ourselves and isn't just going to be whatever the wedding magazines say ;)
Also, as someone with an interest in design, I do notice the small things at weddings like trinkets, decor and small details and now with planning my own I am paying even more attention.
