Hello new Lemmy friends!

Word on the street tells us our community is regularly making it the all page. While this is very cool news to hear, we can see how the sudden emergence of our posts in your feed might feel jarring and probably raises some questions. And also how, without knowing the backstory, our community might appear less than virtuous, so here’s a very brief introduction which hopefully will clear a few things up.

The woman we’re discussing is a body positive influencer and media personality who has gained fame and wealth by lying, manipulating, exploiting her children for content, plagiarizing BIPOC creators and blaming her BIPOC content editor for it (thereby ruining her career), among other things. Her fraudulent behavior is no different (I’d argue worse) from the likes of Jay Shetty (google him if you don’t know who he is or what he did). She’s the latest in a long line of grifting influencers who are abusing their power, taking advantage of their position and exploiting their followers. The difference is that she’s Canadian. Our laws around social media and advertising aren’t as clear (and where they are she’s disobeyed them), add to that, our mainstream media has protected her from those who’ve tried to expose her grift and silenced/intimidated anyone who’s tried to speak out.

Our Reddit sub was taken down due to reports of copyright infringement, which is unfounded and categorically untrue as no one ever tried to steal her work and pass it off as their own. The mods have made an appeal. While at first glance it may seem like we’re just “shitting on her” the sub has been more devoted to investigation and posting proof of her lies than just bitching for the sake of bitching. The reality is that she’s hurt, manipulated and let down a lot of people. She stole intellectual property and employment, caused mental distress and has repeatedly told lies to boost engagement and profit off her audience, so people are understandably upset that their voices are being silenced.

We’re grateful to have been welcomed so kindly by so many of you, and to those sticking around to watch the drama unfold, we’re glad to have you!

Did someone get out the fake tan to go to Brazil? Lol. Also her facial expression is so stupid, close your mouth.

She’s gonna be so out to lunch on this trip and not aware of her surroundings at all. I’m sure she’ll find a way to make it all about her too and how scared she was or something.

I wonder if her fans are going to wonder how it is her daughter she just moved into Uni is already back at home on a Wednesday night 😂

[–] outdatedavianfruit@lemmy.ca 15 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I have to say that is very weird. Are you away at uni or just pretending ? ( Time to cut the apron strings and let the bird out of the nest.) And besides that, she is taking up a bed in res when once again today we see in the Star there is a dire shortage of rooms available for students. Make it make sense when someone with means to live elsewhere is taking up a room that a less fortunate, out of town student needs desperately.

I agree. When you can go back and forth to home that easily (and clearly want to go home), you should just be living at home instead of taking up a valuable spot. I know it’s part of the university experience but there’s clearly a shortage and students can’t find places to live. She’s a kid with a rich mother, we all know her dads job and they’re clearly taking advantage of it all 🤷🏻‍♀️ if she really does go home every weekend, it’ll make this even more sickening because a student who would actually be there 7 nights a week is far more deserving than someone who can go live at 3 other homes whenever they want.

I don’t get this. A lady I work with also did this for her son meanwhile they live in the same town… I asked why of course we have a relationship where we can be honest, and she explained he wanted the “full college experience” meanwhile it’s on her dime and she works so damn hard makes me sad.

I think of kids far from home in a horrible rooming house missing out on making friends or feeling safe.

Just to ease your mind a bit I’m from the area and Guelph is super safe ❤️. I do think it’s really fucking stupid to stay at residence when you have a home 20 minutes away

[–] YouReceivedItLikeThat@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago

Nah. Guelph is turning into a shithole. Source: A Guelphite (moi).

Have fun, girlie! It cracks me up how little awareness she has about the world around her. I would have said no sooo fast and I'm a hardcore NFL fan who loves to travel abroad. Nothing against Brazil, I would love to visit, but if the NFL is giving out these advisories... I'm staying my ass home. Have fun, girlie!

Like shocked and surprised there are so many POC 🫢 so threatened, so unsafe by other types of people existing in their homelands. She is in for a culture shock that is for sure!

She won't say it outright either, but as a PoC myself, I pick up on the subtilities and microagressions. The population of Sao Paolo is one of the most diverse in the world. Even if she only goes from airport- hotel- game- hotel, there will be no escaping the racial and socioeconomic truths that exist in Brazil. Her and her suburban husband aren't going to know what hit them. The sights, smells, and sounds of an urban environment are one thing, but throw LatAm into the mix and ooooh baby. (Says me: Latina from an urban LatAm city who grew up in the hood, and I mean HOOD lol, of another US major city)

[–] 1hotpoetaytoe@lemmy.ca 7 points 2 weeks ago

I am an ambiguous bi-racial POC to strangers and when I travel internationally people often assume I am whatever they are. When I was in Brazil a native Brazilian spoke to me as if I understood Portuguese. I responded in my rudimentary SoCal Spanish that I did not understand. It was so subconscious and embarrassing. Years later I now have the language to recognize this for the micro aggression that it was. I consider myself to have cultural consciousness and I totally stumbled. I cannot even imagine if she were to wander outside of her pod out of the insulted hospitality sector where English is spoken😬Out in the wild on the streets she would look like the biggest mark for the taking oozing awkward visible discomfort. All while giving her “don’t they know who I am vibe”. Hot mess express coming through 🚂 São Paulo can be an overwhelming city to the worldliest traveler to say the least. She is not even a traveler she is a vacationer.

One more thing, one more thing my fellow. Were you following along for the Beyoncé weekend when I am assuming Shine sent the POC “friend”. That was an absolute, I’m a very white lady really trying hard not to be cancelled cringe fest. I was sooo uncomfortable watching every story unravel. Yikes on all the bikes.

[–] Uterusofsteel@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 weeks ago

Yes, omg! I do remember that! Sometimes, the tip toeing makes it worse, but when you don't know how to actually have fun you will always look ridiculous.

[–] FraudulentFruit1@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 weeks ago

I wouldn’t be sad if she gets robbed.
