Do I have to play any other Final Fantasy games before XVI? (lemmy.world)

The game looks fascinating to me, but I've never played any of the other FF games. I'm aware of the characters in VII, but outside of that, would I need to play any others to play XVI?

Off note, but I didn’t realize until now that Cid from FF7 has a pack of cigarettes strapped on to his head with his goggles. Truly a captain badass.
