Despite all the lawsuits, it's still sailing

[–] Treedrake@fedia.io 45 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

But not run by the original owners. And the current team is really shady. I wouldn't trust downloading an .exe from there.

Good thing you don't download executables from torrent sites?

[–] Treedrake@fedia.io 20 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] ryannathans@aussie.zone 5 points 3 weeks ago

From the torrents though

[–] abfarid@startrek.website 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Don't you ever pirate software?

[–] ryannathans@aussie.zone 9 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

My point is the executables are delivered by bittorrent, not from the pirate bay.

[–] abfarid@startrek.website 20 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

In that case your comment doesn't make much sense, because when people say "don't trust that torrent site" they mean the contents of the torrents hosted there. In fact, if you use magnets, you don't download anything at all from torrent sites ever.

[–] ryannathans@aussie.zone 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Your browser downloads the web pages which includes the magnet text

So is your point to argue semantics?

"Downloading" colloquially referes to the proces of saving some data onto persistent storage device. When you open HTML pages they are loaded directly into RAM. They might be saved to drive if they are cached. But no regular person would refer to that process as downloading. Even I, as a webdev, don't.

There is a vocal contingency on this website that have no fuckin’ clue how any technology works, and they get really combatative when you even attempt to help them learn. It’s really weird.

[–] abfarid@startrek.website 1 points 3 weeks ago

There aren't that many. A good chunk of us here are Linux nerds. You don't have to be condescending about confronting (I assume) intentional misinterpretation of comments.

[–] abfarid@startrek.website 1 points 3 weeks ago

I suppose, at this point, I want to understand whether you accidentally misinterpreted the context of the original comment (downloading .exe from TPB) or intentionally misinterpreted it for "comedic effect".

Windows executables are really shady.

[–] TheNewShaft@lemm.ee 17 points 4 weeks ago (4 children)

Riddled with malware, but still sailing

[–] aiccount@monyet.cc 50 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Been using it for decades, never an issue for me. What in the world are you trying to download over there??

[–] fraksken@infosec.pub 120 points 4 weeks ago (3 children)
[–] DebatableRaccoon@lemmy.ca 18 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Well if he's daft enough to go looking for it, what's he expecting?

[–] AFC1886VCC@reddthat.com 1 points 3 weeks ago

Me when gaining access to the computer of someone I don't like

[–] Treedrake@fedia.io 25 points 3 weeks ago

I'd say this might be true for programs, but as long as you download movies, shows and music I'd assume it's fine as long as you use common sense.

[–] blandfordforever@lemm.ee 22 points 4 weeks ago

The technologically illiterate pirate is an easy target.

[–] Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 3 weeks ago

Just don't download any software and you'll be fine. Sure, there are better trackers for movies, TV shows and music nowadays, but I'm still glad we have The Pirate Bay
