Welcome to !newcastleupontyne@lemmy.world - our little Northern community on ~~reddit~~ Lemmy.

I'm looking for new friends. Can I do that here?

The subreddit itself does not actively host meetups, but we have an associated discord where North East residents are able to chat more casually and potentially host or attend the same. You can find that community here: https://discord.gg/Cnr2jCcEwd

Got a question?

~~We get a lot of questions about areas of Newcastle, places to visit, places to eat, places to live. Please check the wiki first. It is constantly a work in progress, and please do not hesitate to ask your question if you cannot find it there.~~

Lemmy doesn't really have wiki functionality yet. It may come in a future update. We may also start a mediawiki project instead, which would tie in nicely to the FOSS spirit of Lemmy.

#Where is the sidebar I keep hearing about?

On the right. You should see it regardless of what Lemmy instance you are using

Can I post my referral links here?

No.

Can I post my survey/advertisement/social media here?

No.

We make exceptions for small local businesses on limited occasions, such as when events (like vandalism, fire, etc) cause hardship for local operators, or for new businesses starting out in the North East. This is done at our discretion, and is limited to requests for help in their recovery only, or limited, clear, and concise posts about a new business and what it offers. Surveys are prohibited without exception, according to the wishes of the community.

Asking to post your survey in modmail will not change our minds. The answer will still be no.

I'm looking for intoxicants or other recreational consumables...

No. Whilst many of us may have differing views on whether or not certain consumables should be legalised or decriminalised, we must take care at present not to run afoul of authorities and/or the hosts of this Lemmy instance. Casual discussions around anything relating to such products are acceptable - provided no discussions on obtaining or selling them occur. This rule does not include alcoholic products, although discussions on whether it should are welcomed.

Why are people here so x/y/z?

This ~~subreddit~~ sub...lemmy(?) represents a ~~tiny~~ fraction of Newcastle upon Tyne *. There are huge communities of peoples that are not represented here, but are culturally significant. We try to put across this information when asked, but this subreddit is not a facsimile of the city at large. We can give you an idea of what the city is like, but the only way to truly experience what we have to offer is to visit, and immerse yourself. We're not lying when we say it's well worth the trip.

  • Not so tiny anymore! The associated subreddit has a user count that is approximately one third of the population of Newcastle. Still, this is not a complete representative overview

I'm running a charity event in Newcastle, can I post it here?

Provided it isn't a survey, you are vetted appropriately, you observe the law, and you make safety and accessibility accomodations. We'd prefer you do so in the form of a text post, and that you include as much relevant information as possible in an easy-to-read format. A point of contact is preferred if possible, and be mindful that including any shortened links (amzn.to, bit.ly, fb.me etc) may leave your post at the mercy of the spam filter.

How do I get from x to y?

The Tyne and Wear Metro is a frequent answer to this question. We also have a comprehensive bus network - although we are just as affected by staff and funding shortages as any other city in the UK at present. It's usually best to plan for the possibility of a bus arriving late, but this is slowly getting back to normal. The Metro runs from the airport, through Monument (in the centre of town), through Gateshead, through Sunderland, to South Hylton. Another Metro line runs from St James', through Monument, along the Tyne, around the coast, through Northumberland Park, back through Monument and Gateshead, to South Shields. Here is a map listing all stops. For the west of Newcastle, you will need to look at bus routes from Blackett Street or Market Street.

A journey planner that includes bus services, the Shields Ferry, Metro and local/regional rail services, along with short walks, can be found here.

Can I park for free in Newcastle upon Tyne?

A compilation of free parking zones can be found here.

So apparently, I found someone else's rubbish in my recycle bin. Mind you, the shed it's stored in only has ~5 recycle bins, mine is numbered with my flat number, and they were dumb enough to leave a parcel box with their own address on it, which shouldn't even go into any of these ~5 bins.

While it shoudln't be a huge problem, if their shit contains anything that makes the bin men refuse to take the rubbish, I would be alone with the problem, and they also left half a pack of canned beer, and some of them are still oozing beer. Together with my own, the bin is kind of full,

On the other hand, it feels really petty to complain about some rubbish in my bin. Also, I may look/feel like a weirdo/pervert if they ask how I found them, because that indicates that I went through all of their rubbish to find that parcel box with the address on it. Even though I think they did this to themselves by dumping their waste into someone else's bin.

What would you do? On a scale from "don't even bother" to "Report them immediately", how serious is this matter? Is it worth doing anything about it?

I'm relatively new to this whole Newcastle metro business, and I have only ever used paper tickets and PAYG. I've been considering getting a season ticket (Pop card), and I wasn't sure whether I should tap in and out with a season ticket, since there's no balance to change. I looked it up on the Nexus website, and it looks like you should tap, however...

Thinking about the last 10 times I used the metro, out of the ~20 people who got off with me, only 3-5 other people tapped their card on the yellow reader. That made me think: there's no way this many people had paper tickets. So you either don't tap in/out with your season ticket (but then how do you check zones), or out of the 20 people, at least ~10 just tried to get away not buying a ticket.

What's going on? Should I just ditch my PAYG Pop card and go thug life (since apparently, you can almost always get away like the other 10 people), or you just simply don't have to tap your season ticket?

Not sure the details, was going to ask if he was lost as airport is only two miles away. But apparently they needed a doctor on the area fast.

Shame about the rain, but it's been a great afternoon down at the Ouseburn watching the duck race!

Don't think I've ever been more tempted to lug my laptop over to the Free Trade Inn beer garden and pretend to work for the next 4 hours.

Looks like Newcastle is about 5~10c cooler that other parts of UK this week. You feeling jealous or smug about it?
