Hi there! I'm another reddit refugee, been lurking here since the API fiasco.

How do I search for a community across the several federated instances? Is there a directory somewhere?

Thanks!

So, greetings! ๐Ÿ˜„

In short:
Early 30s, in an oddball place up north in the US. I draw things, photograph them badly, and enthuse about ecology a lot. I luv the site iNaturalist! Other hobbies and interests include regenerative agriculture, fountain pens (and art supply/media in general), cemetery and burial history, fantasy/scifi lit, roguelike games, animal rehab, and critter-keeping. The scrambling of communities on reddit and twitter has sent me a-wandering, and I like this place. Nice to meet ya!

Rambles: I'm an artist and illustrator by trade (plus whatever work I can find on the side- I've worn many hats!), and admittedly I'm a bit coy about it here on Mander. Posting art online has become so tied up and bogged down with branding, identity, commerce, and the like over the past few years, that the idea of presenting that "face" here up-front-and-center felt...off.

But, it is who I am, and experiences in the industry and the people I've met through it have shaped everything about how I see the world and sciences. In particular, I worked in the graphics department for a state natural resources department for a spell, and it was quite formative. Here's a quiet link to my work. If you have any little projects that could use a doodle to liven them up, I may be able to help.

Anyway, cheers to all of you trying to make something nice happen here. It really does make things better. :)

Hi everyone! I'm excited to say that this is my first post on Lemmy! This reminds me of "the old days" when I was first learning the internet (in a good way!) I'm a Computer Science grad student focusing on AI, and have an interest in a ton of different areas. Anyway, it's great to be here!

I introduce myself: I am Galician and citizen of the World. Proud father. I love science (specially astronomy), technology, nature and photography. I play padel and surf and whenever I can I escape with my camper van.

Hello! This is my first time using the "threadiverse". I joined this instance because there's a lot of interesting stuff going on on Lemmy and Kbin. I heard about this part of the fediverse only recently, mainly coinciding with the controversy on Reddit, though I've been using the fediverse since even before Twitter got stupid.

Like my profile suggests, I'm into environmental science and policy issues, and have gotten myself sucked into some local native plant groups and doing wildlife observation stuff. I'm also a musician, and I enjoy videogames as well, mainly older ones.

Shown here is the full version of the photo from which I got my avatar. It's my own photo. There's a snapping turtle that can be occasionally sighted at a nearby park. Sidenote: snapping turtles look way more elegant in the water.

OMG I can edit the thread OP! I remember this specifically being impossible on Reddit lol

i am a biology student from croatia mostly interested in herpetology and microbiology. i would like to start posting about those, and other, topics in a week or two when my exams are over. hopefully that will force me to read more science papers, maybe do some field work etc. is that something you guys would be interested in? if so, feel free to tell me what topics do you want me to cover! :)

My name is a bit of a silly play on "Biggie Smalls" in my native language. But that has nothing to do with me as a person besides highlight the fact that I really dig golden era hip-hop.

I wanted to introduce myself because I haven't been using reddit for years now and I'm really looking for some kind of an online community to feel a part of. I lurk on MetaFilter but besides that I don't really have a home-base so I'm hoping I can find it here. Once I figure out how Fediverse works properly, which is a bit of a pain in the ass, but in a good way. It has made me a little excited about the future of the internet in a way I haven't been in almost a decade. Mainly because I feel this is a bit of a more of a private space. That's a reason why I'm keeping the introductory post vague. Although if you're truly interested in any of what I've written it's not like I'm keeping state secrets so feel free to ask.

And now, for me is the best time to explore Fediverse because I'm taking a little breather back in my hometown, somewhere far on the Eastern flanks of Europe, before I make a move to the Mediterranean in my 20+ year old Golf. So, if you've got any tips on exploring Fediverse and/or cool places to be in in the Balkans, I am all ears (eyes?).

As for my education and interests, I'm a jack of all trades, master of none. I mainly make my living with graphic design now and I'm planning to continue doing that. I currently work with small commercial projects and NGOs but my lil' dream is to be self-sufficient as a professional artist in a niche space. My education is in philosophy and politically I lean quite far left, my field of interest being more historical than philosophical, which is to say I really like finding out more about the history of anarchism (and history in general). I also really like cars and If anyone knows of a space on Fediverse dedicated to DIY projects dealing with cars or home improvement please point me in the right direction. I also care about science and the Earth, I'm a bit of an unrealized hippie and the older I get the more I try to care about the earth. In general, I guess I'm a bit of a walking cabinet of curiosities. Oh and I almost forgot that I once almost went the path of a professional photographer. I still really enjoy photography, but I'm not as focused on it anymore. On the more underground side of things, I've been doing graffiti for almost 17 years now and I'm going through my second most active period since my early teen years now.

So by now I've probably either lost your attention or captured it, in either case, I'm battered because I've been dealing with moving myself and my stuff around the country and it's my time to go cleanse myself and fall into a heavenly, deep sleep.

It's nice to meet y'all and I'm looking forward to living here.

P.S. If anyone knows if/how I can connect to Mastodon with the account I've made here then that would be interesting to know. I'm new to both spaces although I've known about Mastodon for much longer.

Hi everyone! Guess Iโ€™ll make an intro post to try to find some cool people and cool communities. In the real world Iโ€™m the head of research lab for a company in a university (hopefully the best of both world instead of the worse of both), and my research focuses on machine learning and robotics. Otherwise I like math, the environment, nature. I saw quite some communities in mander on nature but not so much math, machine learning, and robotics?

Outside of work nothing better than a good hike, a nice climbing session, or an evening playing video games :).

I'm a field linguist, but I'm interested in natural sciences too and this instance has a nice icon.

I like looking at pictures of fungi, slime molds and Cephalopods, so I'll be lurking in the respective communities.

Not sure if anyone are reading these, but here I am - trillian: hiker, gardener, nature-and-science-interested person in general. I'm located in Scandinavia, owned by cats and a dog and can usually be found studying plants in the garden and the forest round the house or hiking some trail.

Hello! I'm part of the reddit exodus. I have a background in biology and I'm into native plants, fungi, molds, reptiles and amphibians, and invertebrates. One of my favorite activities is flipping logs to see what I find, and I've started to clumsily dabble in macro photography.

I also keep about 30 varieties of isopod and 10 millipede species. I'm passionate about ensuring their appropriate care and culture, and about photographing and identifying wild inverts.

I'm hoping to create a community here for isopod/myriapod enthusiasts, and maybe one for canine coat color genetics/dog genetic testing. So far, the fediverse is pretty cool!

Hi, my name is Stephen and i'm... making an intro post I guess. My main hobby is math (especially calculus), but I'm also interested in subjects like astronomy and weather.

13

I paint landscapes (which are depictions of mostly light and water and plants and rocks and air and how those things interact,) cityscapes (all of the above plus people, and what people make and destroy) make sketchbooks, work with kiln-glass, explore materials, have an ongoing fascination with the intersection between tech and art and its possibilities, hope for the best, roll my eyes and grumble a great deal.

I'm excited to learn more about growing from folks here. My main interest is market farming and astronomy. I'm in the totality path of the Apr 8, 2023 eclipse and have a solar filter ready for the telescope. Home darkness is Bortle 4, but getting worse. Expect posts about ducks, purple-hull peas, and farmers market economics.

Hi everyone! Excited to join Mander, and Lemmy as an extension. It feels like the golden days of internet forums but with modern twists.

I'm a chemical engineer with research focus in bioprocessing for fuels and specialty chemicals. The last year or so I've also been teaching introductory biology courses.

My interests mainly fall under natural sciences and I'm looking forward to helping grow the community. Hobby-wise there's nothing better than a nice day fishing while enjoying a home-brew beverage, then a big family meal.

See y'all around!

๐Ÿ‘‹ Hi Everyone, I'm a computational microbiologist studying how the get microbiome affects child development. I used to be an immunologist, and still dabble in that for research as well.

I write code primarily in the julia langage (though I can python and R a bit too), and I'm also into fermentation (shout-out to the fermentation community on this instance), gardening, rock climbing, and Zen Buddhism.

I'm part of the reddit exodus, looking forward to seeing more of the fediverse grow! If you're a mastodon user, I'm also over there, though not nearly as active as I plan to be here (twitter was never my thing either).

I'm a natural process artist from the US, and that means that I use various natural processes as a basis for my imagery. I wrote a blog post about it here, which describes it and how it came to be, but it can be described more quickly by saying that it uses the process of sediment deposition to apply pigments, which is the same process by which rivers produce deltas, and alluvial fans in nature. It's also similar to the way the waves on a beach can arrange different sand grains, according to their size, weight, and density, resulting in beautiful patterns due to their contrasting colors.

This painting technique still doesn't have a name. My original name was "natural process painting" because it utilized not just sediment deposition, but fractal field imagery - but then I realized that natural process art was much bigger than just my artwork, even though I was initially struggling to describe only it, and even though it could theoretically still be called "natural process painting", I soon learned that there were others painting with natural processes.

So my artwork fits in right about here...

I've made a community for natural process art here, and I've been trying to make one for fractal field painting but no server seems to let me create more than 1 community.

I've always loved science & nature every bit as much as art, so I'm hopeful that I can find a home here among some like-minded people, who might enjoy a juxtoposition of them!
