In spring 1945, Nazi Germany is running out of time, and the Third Reich is scrambling to find ways to survive and continue its nefarious deeds. Soviet intelligence resident in Berlin, Standartenfuhrer Max Otto von Stierlitz (also known as Colonel Maxim Maximovich Isaev), is on a mission for the Center: to identify and disrupt Germany's looming negotiations with the United States and Great Britain.

What sets this TV series apart is how it portrays the truth of any confrontation with evil: the enemy is not an operatic villain who can be defeated like an evil clown-hooligan, driven away with a stick. The enemy is hostile not in appearance, but in the essence of their beliefs. The show presents the enemy, not as cardboard cutouts, but as humans who are intelligent, and have their own plans and ambitions.

I really, really like For All Mankind. It's a good sci-fi show. It's not winning any awards for its depiction of the USSR, but it firmly puts the Russians in the antagonist seat, not necessarily the 'irredeemable evil' seat.

FAM getting a spin off entirely focused on the Soviet's perspective during its alternate history is not something I ever expected to see.

Considering that the latest season of FAM establishes the USSR outliving its real-life point of collapse, while retaining its communist values, I hope that this 'Star City' spin off is going to be an even more humanizing look at the Soviets.

Los Angeles, Nov 15 (Prensa Latina) The innovative animated film made in China and titled Deep Sea will be released in North American theaters later this month, according to Hollywood today.

It is a cutting-edge Chinese animation work that has already been presented in the international festival circuit throughout this year.

The film is directed by Tian Xiaopeng (“Monkey King: Hero is Back”) and produced by YI Qiao (“Nezha”) through October Pictures and Coloroom, according to Variety.

Tian and his team developed a particle-based CG technique, creating 3D images from abstract Chinese ink paintings.

Theatrical rights were acquired by Viva Films from Netherlands-China sales company Fortissimo Films, and plans a Nov. 24 release with versions dubbed in Chinese and English.

Deep Sea is a fantasy adventure that tells the story of Shenxiu, a girl who has felt deep sadness since she was abandoned by her mother.

During a family cruise, she falls into the sea and breaks into the Deep Sea restaurant, where she meets the inventive underwater chef Nanhe and embarks on a journey between dreams and reality.

The film premiered commercially in China last January was then played at the Berlin Film Festival and had other festival dates in Neuchatel, Melbourne, and London.

For All Mankind is an AppleTV original that shows an alternate history retelling of the space race. In this AU, the Soviets land on the moon first, which extends the space race into a decades-long conflict.

The show currently covers about 30 years of alternate history showing the US and the Soviets establish a moon base, new propulsion systems, and eventually landing on Mars.

This show is really good. It's excellent hard sci-fi. It really sticks out to me, though, for its depiction of the Soviets.

See, in this universe, the Soviet Union doesn't collapse. At least not at the same time it collapsed in our own history. Instead, they stick around and consolidate significant power, winning victories they lost in our own timeline.

This means that by the 90s, communism has essentially rooted itself as a dominant ideology in most of the world.

Now, don't get me wrong: this show depicts the soviets as evil, with the KGB boogyman following every Russian character. But the show doesn't do a great job at depicting this. Instead, the Soviet Union ends up being an absolute economic powerhouse that consistently keeps up with the US at every turn, only starting to fall behind technologically for unclear reasons in the latest season. Hell, Mexico is communist in the FAM timeline.

I think this is telling. If you construct a universe where the Soviets 'don't lose,' they end up winning. Half of the world is communist and it's gotten to the point where it seems internally inconsistent that the US is managing to keep up.

I just wanted to post about one of my favorite TV shows. Anyone else watch FAM?

I... actually liked the fourth episode (the recent racing episode) more than the initial two that took place on Dooku's planet of Serreno.

The third episode with Crosshair is, of course, the best of season 2 so far (and probably the best of The Bad Batch serial so far).

Also... Rampart's a dick.
