I am an American that looks nebulously ethnic. My skin color is light brown. I’m not African American. In the last 5 years I’ve noticed a real shift in the way American caucasians are perceived and treated in Asia and Latin America. When I am by myself I’m treated reasonably well. Usually in accordance with the local feelings towards foriegners. Lately if I am traveling with another American that happens to be caucasian my experience is completely different. We receive the extreme foreigner upcharge at restaurants and shops. My Spanish and Thai are not good but I understand the basics and we would receive side talk insults in the local language at restaurants and shops. I’ve been stopped and searched by the police more often, been the target of attempted robbery. Any thoughts or opinions about this? My experiences have been in Mexico, Cambodia, Ecuador, Thailand, Colombia & Vietnam

I was going to go to Da Nang but seems the weather is quite miserable in December. I don't mind if it rains a bit, not too bothered about night life, ideally somewhere not too expensive.

Any recommendations? Thanks!!

As an American DN (m/ late 30’s), I’ve been thinking about how to save for retirement. Since I work for myself, I don’t have access to a 401k. Since I live mostly overseas, I haven’t been contributing to an IRA (I might be wrong and perhaps I can contribute but I'm under impression I can’t) so I’ve been mainly investing in low cost index funds. I’m currently able to invest between $4K-8k USD a month into a brokerage , and I figure that’s what I’ll continue doing until I learn about other ways people (especially Americans) are saving for retirement. I’m curious if there are other investment vehicles people in the community use to save for retirement (especially Americans who aren’t working for a company that gives them a 401k or similar)

So I’ve been using wise for years without problems in Mexico, Guatemala, peru. then they suddenly locked my card in Costa Rica without warning. Because I’d been using it without problems for years I trusted it and, perhaps foolishly, it was the only payment method I had. I faced homelessness and no food , which in latin America is dangerous. They asked for documents which I sent them and they said it could take 10 - 15 days to look at them. To me to do this without warning is pretty outrageous. So just so you know….

Edite to add I normally take three cards with me just in case, unfortunately this time for various reasons it was t possible. As I’d had such a smooth experience with wise I had no reason to expect this. Turns out it was because I started teaching English online and had a student from Saudi Arabia so it must have flagged some automated system when he paid me into wise. They’ve given me 24 hours to upload another flood of documents before they cancel my account, and Im about to board a plane. Totally u reasonable behaviour you would t get with a normal bank.

How to deal with a really annoying neighbor? She decided to tap on the wall ALL DAY EVERY DAY in an attempt to dictate my behavior. I am in Buenos Aires, Argentina if it matters.

I'm the guy who was complaining about the smell of the apartment. Fortunately, whoever was chain smoking left and the only smell I get is maybe a little weed smell every other day now.

Even worse though is the neighbor above me. She taps all day every day. Taps at me for brushing my teeth. Taps at me for typing (I'm a full time online student, I have no choice but to do my school work...) tapped on the wall twice now because I was taking a shit. Taps when I move from one side of my bed to the other. Taps when I get up from my desk and go to my refrigerator. Taps when I watch TV at a moderately low volume in the middle of the afternoon. 2 out of the last three nights her and her bf tapped relentlessly in hopes of making me go to bed (lol) which is pointless because they wake me up with loud sex within 30 minutes of that.

Honestly it feels like she's just trying to get me to move out, which I cannot really afford to do because I will get a ridiculously low amount of money back.

The AirBNB host claims there's nothing they can do about it. I have lived in an apartment on a college campus, an apartment in philly, and several apartments in Argentina. I have NEVER had a neighbor this infuriating.

They know the walls are thin and want privacy for when they fuck, but want me to have zero privacy all day and dictate when I go to bed. What the hell am I supposed to do?
