I've been building a music production business for the past couple of years and am finally living the DN life after years of lurking around here. Currently in Lisbon and heading to Thailand for the first few months of 2024.

Being a DNing music producer definitely has its struggles - especially having to work out of AirBnBs instead of studios, and having to carry around gear and instruments (I currently pack a traveler guitar, a MIDI keyboard, decent headphones, and an interface). At the same time it's an extremely flexible profession and I get to work whenever for the most part. I do most of my work from my accommodation as co-working spots aren't fond of guitars lol.

I meet a lot of software engineers, design folk, video editors etc but am yet to find a DN'ing music professional.

What's your experience been like?

So I'm a professional in data, AI, digital working in a range of industries with 20+ years experience. Now mostly in management level, but good technical knowledge. I'm the guys that sets up high functioning teams fast.

Experienced on projects ranging from millions to billions. I'm looking for tips on finding high paying contracting gigs. Happy to have boots on the ground initially and fly in/out as needed.

I'm assuming this is a who you know game, so I guess the question is who are the best people to know, and what methods work best to build a profile + little black book of contacts?

I'm not really fussed what industry.

I need to convince my company to allow me to be a contractor. I understand moving to an hourly rate for my base salary but what happens to commission. Do I get it outright and set aside the taxes for it?

It seems that becoming a contractor is the best thing to do in order to stay working for the same company that does not permit working abroad.

I can’t not tell them, it’s a tech company, they will find out lol.

Putting a whole deck presentation that highlights the benefits and their options. It will cover that I have international accounts and can talk to them in their time zone, I will work the same US hours, fly myself in or pay 50% of travel for onsite visits, and the benefits of being a contractor so there are no legal/tax ramifications. Add anything else?

Is there an eSIM company that to multiple countries or at least internationally?

I got the new iPhone and my old iPhone has been locked by t-mobile (neither apple or t-mobile will do anything about it). Its been hell; and i don’t want that to happen to my new phone. I only travel between USA and EU countries. Any recommendations?

p.s. I know you can pay someone to unlock your phone but then I would have to pay for that 8 times a year

Many thanks 🙏

I would like to spend 2-3 weeks in Japan preferably Fukuoka. My birthday is coming up…..I would love to treat myself since I have always wanted to visit Japan. Although, I have never been to Japan before but something about big cities has never been something that I enjoy. Lol. I feel lost as if I am in a complicated maze. So Tokyo is out of my list.

  1. Are there mid size cities you can recommend?

  2. Has anyone been to Fukuoka?

  3. Any other helpful tips is quite appreciated

Hello,

I am in Sri Lanka and am helping my maid set up her business to sell products to tourists/foreigners/expats.

I taught her how to make peanut butter, kombucha, milk kefir, protein balls, etc.

She already has recurring customers. Currently, it has all been through word of mouth and communicating via WhatsApp.

I want to help her expand/enhance visibility.

The issue is - technology seems to be rather difficult for her to use. She is great with WhatsApp but she is slow with Facebook, other apps on her phone, and does not have Instagram.

I want to open one social media account for her until she is comfortable, then opening a 2nd.

Which social media account do you recommend or see yourself using to search for products/services?

Thank you

I hate being in Australia for the most part - it's a country of tall poppy syndrome that has squashed any opportunities to focus on innovation or interesting cultural development for the sake of rent seeking industries.

In any case, I really want to move to Europe long term, potentially migrating but in any case a remote working type of job would be perfect for my lifestyle.

I just finished my degree which was mostly social science and philosophy - good for policy work, but while government jobs are flexible, they are unfortunately not something that can support me moving overseas ;(.

In lieu of this, I've considered trying to learn IT related skills (I know it's a meme but alas) - don't really know where to start but programming sounds like it would suit me best. Got a friend who learned to code over lockdown and now has a front end Web dev job that's completely wfh.

Learning something purely for future employment can be problematic - Ideally I'd like to learn IT skills that are somewhat transferable to my interests in music production and more generally philosophy.

Obviously though it would be a big investment of my time to learn these skills - did anyone do this for the same reasons I want to and have success or failure?

Just wondering if anyone knows the situation a little better to help me better understand my options. I just got a job offer that requires me to be a resident in my current state. I'll be using this income to qualify for housing in another state. It's not a prestigious position, and I do plan to continue looking until I find something better. The job is fully remote, and I will still only be about 6 hours away if I ever MUST show up for any incidental reason.

I've casually lived in other states in the past and never changed anything to indicate I was living there. I know there isn't a straightforward answer, and a lot will depend on the company's enforcement and the state laws. Is it typically possible to maintain a residence in a state in which you're not living? How exactly is this sort of thing defined, and to what extent could I represent myself as a resident of my original state after moving to the new one?

I know I can travel and stay in Portugal with no visa for 90 days, but my question is can I work as a freelancer with my existing UK based contract during this 90 day period without having a work visa? Or do I only need a work visa if I want to stay past 90 days?

I'm familiar with the challenges of driving in Mexico, so not necessarily looking for advice on that. Just looking for a good, affordable (emphasis on affordable) place to spend a few months if I'm going to drive down from San Diego.

I'm going to go to either Phuket or Bangkok for a few months. I've never been to Thailand and I'm curious to see what the fuss is all about. I will be working remotely so I am a "digital nomad".

Now I want to ask about Visas, I found out that there is a work permit that allows working foreigners to stay up to one year (I doubt I will stay that long, unless I love it to death). So my plan now is:

  1. Get a tourist Visa for 60 days, online.
  2. Once I'm in there apply for this work permit.

Will this work? Is there a better way?

Here they talk about the work permit, in case you're curious https://thedigitalnomadjourney.com/digital-nomad-work-permit-thailand/

Hey everyone, that's my first post here as I recently changed to remote working - so many questions! It's a radical life change and people should be aware of it 😀 Anyway, I'm considering to move to Valencia at some point next year, but would like to taste the water first - how did you find it? I'd be open to house swapping and recently joined homexchange. If you have other recommendations, I'm all ears 👀

I appreciate the countless posts on here about Argentina. They have really helped me gain an understanding of the blue rate, etc. I'm hoping you lovely people can help me choose a neighborhood in/ near BsAs.

I plan to spend a month or two in Buenos Aires. I am a semi-professional salsa dancer and I'd like to improve my tango.

However, I am older (40F) and my mom (70F) may accompany me for a few weeks. We prefer staying in small(er) towns. Are there any neighborhoods or even suburban areas that may offer less of a big city vibe while still maintaining accessibility to the city via train?

Palermo seems like a decent choice, but I'm not particularly interested in coworking spaces, hip restaurants, or the nightlife scene. I don't drink much and I typically make friends with other salsa dancers at the studios so the DN meetups arent important to me.

I do however need fantastic internet for my job. I speak Spanish and have extensive travel experience.

Thank you all for your time.

So basically I’ve worked at this job in the US for the past year but my visa ended so I am back in Australia where I’m from. I’ve been working remotely whole I’m back and I’m meant to be working on getting a new visa to go back to the US. I’m kind of the only person at my job that is working remotely right now as everyone is based in the US working from the office. My visa is taking a while to prepare and start, and my boss talked to me the other week giving me some options on what to do which included 1) getting this visa, which will cost up to a few thousand and may take a few months OR I could continue working from home in Australia for the foreseeable future (although I know she would prefer me to go back) I originally told her that I’m leaning more towards going back to the US with this new Visa. However, after some thought I would really want to live a digital nomad life, working from Asia as I love travelling and have solo travelled abit. I want to give it a try and maybe go to Malaysia/ Thailand for a month and work from there. But I’m not sure if I should tell my boss or just go secretly and test it out before making a decision. I also don’t know if this is even legal for me, would I be able to do this without them knowing. Do they need to know legally? Would I need to get a digital nomad visa? Or could I just work they and they just pay me how they normally would?

WeWork currently has an offer which gets you 50% off the WeWork All Access Plus subscription for 6 months.

Code: EARLYACCESS50 (expires today, 15th of November 2023)

I just signed up today and got my key card. Even better I signed up with Primary Location Indonesia and now I pay $60/month for 6 months and after that $120/month which can be used world wide. Kinda neat as you can keep the local price even after returning to US and access all coworking spaces.

Hi hi!

Planning my first month long trip in Feb or March 2024 and want to discuss my options with seasoned travelers.

Context: I’m 25 M and I’ve got my Pom/Corgi mix, scooter. I make about 85k USD a year and work for a fully remote company. We have unlimited PTO, hella flexibility and my boss is fully on board. This would be my first time traveling alone.

Desires: fiber internet or decent speeds, walkable cities, vicinity to major transportation hubs (though not a deal beaker), close to nature (rain forest, ruins), and away from tourists. Art history, music and dance are my top priorities. Would love a place with diverse wine or a tequila culture.

Budget: for safety reasons, I was considering an AirBnb for a week or two and wanted to ‘hop around’ subsequently. No more than $800-900 USD is what I feel comfortable paying for a first trip. I’m sure I can find cheaper, any hostel recommendations?

My Spanish is minimal for now, plan to crash course once I have a plan. I’d love to bring my dog and am prepared to figure out logistics for him, any recommendations?

Locations for consideration (in no order):

  • Manuas, Brazil
  • Medellin, Columbia
  • Ushuaia, Argentina
  • Punta Arenas, Chile

Open to any other recommendations too :)

I've got a very short layover weekend here and I don't know what type of clothing is most suitable. What do the locals wear this time of year and what is the rain gear like? I'm new to South America and don't want to look like a tourist if I can help it.

I find that krakow and Warsaw is great. Any other ones that you know? Especially for in Schengen flights

I thought Helsinki might be good but it’s like $250 vs $50 to Sicily from Poland

Sorry if this question has been asked. I’m just seeing a lot of different answers and not sure what is correct. I am working with a client who is going to purchase business development training. He has a tourist visa in France right now. He is worried about building a business because he’s not allowed to work. But isn’t he allowed to run a business out of the US while he is over there?

EDIT: I forgot to mention this is a completely online business. He would not be marketing to people in France.
