I have high airbnb expenses. Can I get better rewards? Thank you for your time!

Hello team,

Myself (29) and my partner (28) will be embarking on our first DN experience in a months time.

We will be working for ourselves and are looking to stay 2-4 weeks in different locations.

What would y’all recommend in regards to luggage?

Any other general advice would also be appreciated - I am open to constructive feedback regarding duration of stays 😊

I've been on and off going abroad for months/year+ at a time for the past 8 or so years...

Sometimes solo, sometimes with 1-4 friends. Long trips. Working on our laptops. Meeting people. Doing experiences. Have had a lot of fun and wouldn't trade it.

But as I'm getting a little older (approaching 30) I am by myself in a Airbnb in South America craving more stability. Don't get me wrong, I'd rather be here than in my home country but the thought my visa runs out soon I got to move has got me thinking it's time for me to settle in one city so I can build a real community again for a few years and have my own place etc.

I been abroad nearly 2 years now (again on this recent trip) so I think I'm going to settle in Mexico City for a few years. Rent an apartment, I know 1 person there, join some local clubs of what I want to do, build new friendships, play sports, date and just have a consistent lifestyle where either I am not leaving/changing or someone else. Also focus on my career more.

Curious to hear others stories/experiences of this?

I will still take trips now and then but for now, I'm settling down.

I've been freelancing and traveling for the past two years. Recently, I landed a full-time position as a bid researcher with a private healthcare company. During the interview, I made it clear that I love to travel, and have kept on stressing that.

So, the company gave me a Dell laptop with a VPN for accessing their intranet. But the VPN is mostly unused. It's there for things like booking travel, hotels, and checking out courses on the learning hub. Anything else, like my email and workspaces(hubble) , doesn't need it.

Now, I found out that the company VPN is often disconnected. Talking to a senior coworker, it turns out lots of people don't bother to connect to it. The only issue they had was when they didn't connect for a whole year, and their laptop missed updates. I'm not planning to pull a disappearing act like that.

Here's my question: Do I really need to bother with downloading a VPN or getting a Mango Mini Router when the company VPN is hardly ever on? I've got a company phone too, rarely used, but I can connect to a VPN on that if needed.

Oh, and my contract doesn't tie me down to working only in the UK. It just talks about the likelihood of me being required to attend site visits. This would be every 3-4 months and would give me the opportunity to connect to the vpn and update the laptop.

The company uses Ivanti, so if anyone is familiar with that, I'm all ears.

Is it possible United suddenly needed a plane down in Guatemala City same-day and so put that flight to send the aircraft down there on sale last minute when it was wide open, resulting in a stupid cheap fare?

Here's the backstory. Either I am insane or this is real. Last Saturday I think it was, I was casually searching cheap international flights from NYC, and I came across a flight that was about $75 AFTER the taxes and fees on United, direct to Guatemala City! I think the base fare said it was about $45 or something insane like that. The flight time said it was about 6hr15min if I recall. I was floored. I don't remember exactly which, but the flight was either same day or next day. I wanna say it was same day, taking off at about 6:30pm but i'm not sure. So anyway, I was actually just kind of goofing off with the flight search while I was multi-tasking at work, so while it did surprise me enough to take note, I don't remember the specific details. It was too short notice for me to do anything about it anyway. So, fast forward a few days, and now I'm back to searching to try to find the same itinerary, and not only are the prices on United much more expensive, but they are not even showing any direct EWR-GUA service! Does anyone have any insight into what could possibly be going on with this? My curiosity is piqued, and I'm beginning to even doubt myself that maybe I hallucinated or daydreamed it LOL. If anyone can settle this curiosity with some info I'd appreciate it!

I've been doing research and can't seem to find an answer anywhere.

I'm Canadian and would like to apply for the Youth Mobility Visa. I'd like to live in France, Spain and Portugal, for a year in each country.

I'm wondering if I may use a YMV 3 times for 3 separate countries?

All advice welcome :)

I have been up the minaret at Jama Masjid, Delhi, and I have heard you can climb the ones at Badshahi and Wazir Khan Mosques in Lahore as well.

I wonder if you guys have come across other mosques where they let you do this?

If I transfer my US number to Mint Mobile for 2FA purposes, can I use that at the same time as I use a local SIM to access data etc in destination country?

Or can you only access US # separately from local data?

Trying to figure out 2FA. It’s def difficult!

Hi! I have a personal wireguard VPN server I would like to connect to via my iPhone while travelling. Is there a way I can configure software kill switch via some client app on iPhone? I understand iOS has some leaks with Apple services but the normal app traffic functionality works. Mainly looking to use Slack for work. I looked at some popular apps like ProtonVPN which have kill switch but don't allow adding custom servers. Any help appreciated.

Hello! For those who have migrated to Spain for long-term (as citizen), which place/city/province would you recommend provided the following criteria/preferences of mine. I will be applying for DNV soon and hope to be in Spain next year.

Background

  • Entering from a third-world SEA country (Philippines), hence the eligibility for shorter length of stay for applying for citizenship
  • I will be bringing with me two medium-sized dogs with thick fur (Chow chows) that need cooler climate.
  • Used to humid, hot days, and heavy rains. However, I kinda hate it. We have an average of 31C/24C throughout the year and could hit 38-42 on summers + the humidity. I am not a big fan of temperatures that are super cold though.
  • Works as self-employed. I earn around ~4400-7400 USD/mo with an average of maybe 5500.
  • Single, just bringing the dogs with me. So 1-2 beds are fine. Late 20s but not really much of a party person or a beach person.

Preferences

  • Tolerable climate/weather
    • I have two dogs that need cooler climate. They are used to AC (24 Celsius) and generally okay with daily temps of 24-28C with a fan. I heard Madrid, Valencia, and Southern Spain gets really hot on summer
    • I'd rather have tolerable climate for my dogs (less hot). If there is an adequate heater on winters, I think I can adapt.
    • I'm cool with buying a portable aircon if there aren't one in the rental place. If the suggestion is still on places that gets really hot, if airconditioning and heater are tolerable, you can suggest it.
  • Rent and Neighborhood
    • It will just be me so 1 or 2 beds at most is fine. For the first 2-3 years, I'd like to limit myself into (hopefully) renting the same place or moving at most once only. Honestly not sure what's a good price I could spend for a stay.
    • I saw that Barcelona is really expensive in terms of rent. But I'm not so sure about the outskirts.
    • My dogs are fine on apartments. They are particularly behave except they will bark on strangers. I don't need a large place. A medium-sized place (50-90sqm) might be fine. Preferably on the ground floor.
    • Preferably has some parks and greeneries. I rarely go outside (except working out or walking my dogs). This is mostly for walking the dogs and walking once in a while
    • Not into very loud and busy alley way (for working and for my dogs).
    • I like a small town feel but still with some sense of community. As a possible expat, I'd like to connect to people and expand network, find friends.
    • I don't really see myself owning a car in 2-3 years (or until I get a citizenship or if I build a family early on for necessity). But I'm fine with public transports to get groceries nearby or things I need.
    • With access to necessities such as hospitals, supermarkets, veterinarians, etc. Doesn't have to be walking distance but a commute of 20-30 minutes do not hurt.
  • Culture, Vibe, etc.
    • I don't really go out a lot. And I'm not much of a beach person (which is ironic since I'm from the Philippines) but maybe it will change if I'm nearby one. Not much of a party person either but fine with chill vibe, maybe going out to pubs once in a while. I know this is an antithesis of the Spain fiesta vibe but who knows maybe I would adopt that.
    • A semi-urban, small town feel with necessities around. If nearby the city center, as long as there are parks, greeneries, and not so loud, it's fine.
    • Spanish level is beginner level on DuoLingo (lol). But I plan to get more serious learning months before I go (and maybe even try to find a school there or here). I speak Filipino which is probably the closest language to Spanish.
    • A bonus would be having a community of expats, or maybe IT professionals nearby for networks and finding friends, or dates or whatnot. But I'm really fine living alone (but that's sad lol)

If there are any other thing that helps you to recommend me something, please ask away.

Thanks for your help! See you soon!

My friends and I have been nomading and working for awhile. Our rentals are kind of remote in both places, . We originally thought we might do long term rentals of scooters but they are fairly expensive so now our plan is to buy a crappy used car in Milan in a few weeks then drive to our destination in Italy. we found good car ensurance, The question is what car should I buy and how much money do I need to save to buy a car, ?

Anyone ever done something like this?

Their customer service is HORRENDOUS. I Think it's also mostly because they outsource to countries were the people, even though they might mean well, have absolutely no idea what customer service means or have a very different concept of it (which is just to apologies without really practically solving the problem or making things right. Their making things right is just being polite and apologizing).

But AirBnB knows this. They make exorbitant amount of money yet offer shi**y service. Why hasn't another company taken over yet?

Im Canadian moving to France for 1 year, Spain for 1 year and Portugal for 1 year. All using the Youth Mobility Visa. From the information Ive gathered, after residing in a European country for over 180 days I will be required to pay taxes. Will I be required to continue paying Nova Scotia taxes (that's where I'm from) as well? Is there a way to lower my Canadian taxes while I'm abroad? I had plans to buy a house and being taxed twice will really cut into my savings.

All advice welcome ! Thanks :)

Hello fellow digital nomads!

My partner and I are on the brink of an exciting chapter in our lives – we've decided to leave our conventional lifestyle behind and embrace the digital nomad way of life. Our first destination is set to be Thailand, a country we've already fallen in love with during a previous visit.

We're reaching out to this amazing community for some wisdom and guidance. We're particularly interested in recommendations for cities in Thailand that are conducive to the digital nomad lifestyle. Key factors for us include reliable internet, a vibrant community of digital nomads (not mandatory) and affordability.

Additionally, we're keen on exploring countries nearby Thailand, but would like to exclude Indonesia and Malaysia from our current plan.

We're looking for destinations that are digital nomad-friendly and offer a unique cultural experience.

Here are some specific questions we have:

  1. What cities in Thailand would you recommend for first-time digital nomads like us?
  2. Are there any lesser-known gems in Thailand that are worth exploring?
  3. For countries neighboring Thailand (excluding Indonesia and Malaysia), which ones would you suggest for digital nomads, and why?
  4. Any tips on networking with other digital nomads and integrating into the local digital nomad community?
  5. Lastly, we'd love to hear about any personal experiences or advice you think would be beneficial for us as we embark on this journey.

This is a big step for us, and getting advice from those who've walked this path before is invaluable.

Thank you so much in advance!

Hey folks, I'm a DN that moves country every 1-2 years. One of the hardest (and most expensive) parts for me is selling all my furniture and then buying it all again in the next country. Shipping it all has never been an option because I always move continents, so would cost more than my furniture did!

I've been playing with the idea of creating a marketplace for expats/ Digital Nomads where you can buy and sell a full house of furniture from any city in the world, but I don't know if this is a 'me-specific' problem. How do you all do it? Am I missing something?

Do you generally find furnished places to live in the short term, or do you buy all your furniture individually until you finally have a full house of stuff and then sell it all individually again?

Not sure if this is the right place for the question, I initially posted in Expats, but realised most don't move as far and frequently as I do!

I’ve been working remotely for over 2 years now, and I’m on my second long-term trip abroad. Except this time, I moved out of my apartment in Detroit and literally have no plans to live anywhere permanently till I own property!

I’m im SE Asia till the end of the year (loving it!) but I’m not sure where to go after. Any recommendations? I was thinking of returning to the states and road tripping for a while, or maybe subletting in a state other than Michigan. But I love how affordable it is here, I could save a lot of money staying abroad.

EDIT: I’m a mixed Black woman traveling solo so safety and comfortability are big priorities to me.

Nearing the end of my 3 month tourist visa in Vietnam. Planning on exiting vietnam, and returning again on a new tourist visa.

My question is whether it is safe for me to put in the application for the new tourist evisa while my current tourist evisa is still in effect and not expired yet. Or, do I need to wait until the day after my visa expires, then submit a new evisa application (which will take 7 days, forcing me to spend a week in another country while I wait to return).

My worry is that, if my visa expires on the 25th, and I submit a new visa application today (17th) designated to begin on the 26th, the application will be automatically rejected as an obvious visa run attempt.

Ideally, I want to apply for the new visa right now in advance, so I can leave and come back the same day when I have to.

Any experience or sources?

You know, those virtual street address type of services (such as TravelingMailbox). When you get mail and you want to forward it to an address in the US through USPS (and other couriers), do they charge you the same rate as USPS or do they mark up the price.

If you have a main phone and a backup phone, can you pls judge my plan and share your system? I'd like to have a backup phone in case my main phone gets stolen or damaged, and for my second job which will require VPN, router, and location masking. I'm from the US.

Phone 1
US phone number for job that's cool with DNing - transferred to Skype, Hushed, Tossable Digits, or Flexphone
Signed into job email
Signed into job Slack
Local SIM & Data for hotspot
Take with me on adventures for maps, pictures?
2FA Banks, Accounts - transfer number to
Stores passwords

Phone 2
Us phone number for job that needs VPN/router/location masking
WIFI only
No local sim
Stays at accommodation
Back up phone

Main questions are:
- Does my plan look good, am I missing any details?
- Should I use Skype, Hushed, Tossable Digits, or Flex Phone to house my US# for 2FA and texts/calls with friends/family?
- Or should I get a super cheap US phone plan and downgrade it in addition to that / instead of that?
- Which US phone plan should I get, if so? I'm on TMobile right now.
- How to get US phone number for phone for job that requires location masking etc without paying for US phone plan?

ChatGPT is telling me to go to Antarctica. Not sure about the cost of living there. And besides, I don't think their food game all that.

Seriously though, where have you spent a considerable amount of time and seen no roaches (the American and German types)?

Hey,

Me and this guy I met are going to do a motor bike trip across SEA, think Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos etc.

I did a motorbike trip across Vietnam with a 110 Honda Wing motorbike, however is it possible to do it on a scooter? As I'm lazy doing manual.

Anyone with experience, please provide the pros and cons to each. For what I can think of motorbikes are more comfortable to ride for long durations.

Appreciate anyones help

Greetings,

I'm going to be doing a working vacation in Columbia in a few months and I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions on where to stay in the city? Also open to the idea of staying some where other than Medellin. Nothing is set in stone except going to Columbia. Looking for a safe area with stuff to do. Thank you!

Hi Reddit. I’m an American with a full time remote job that allows me to work from anywhere. My boyfriend is French and we would like to live together in France, however I have some visa concerns. It appears that the French government does not allow you to work remotely from another country. We plan on getting married within the next couple of years but would like to settle down before then, so residency through marriage is not ideal right now. Has anyone been in a similar situation? I would love you input/advice, I am feeling very confused with all of the contradicting information I find online.
