I couldn't bring myself to spend hundreds on a bike bike, at least not without more travel on the horizon. So card board it is. But... Wheels sound nice. So, I got some castors and trimmed some spare 2x6 and now... Wheels!

Sorry for the bad wording in the title.

For years I've used some ear buds which are unfortunately not available anymore.

I've bought some others recently and while they are fine for 'static' use, they're unusable while driving, because the air stream causes really bad noise.

So question to my fellow cyclists: Do you use some bluetooth ear buds, most preferreable with this sort of neck cable, that 'stay silent' while driving? Brand and model would be very much appreciated.

Thanks and drive save!

First, if anyone uses ridewithgps, let me follow you!

Today's ride and my progress this year. I've been riding pretty seriously for about 2015. At one point I was working for a bike powered composting service, where I hitched a trailer to my bike and picked up food scraps from peoples homes to bring them to a site to get composted. I'd end up with 200+ lbs on my bike, at 14-20 miles, on my 26+ lb Surly!

Alas, for the past 5 years or so I've become more of a fair weather rider since I moved and it's my rainier where I'm at. Couple with bouts of pretty intense depression and gaining 35 lbs, and I end up back at point A after I build up some muscle and a bit of endurance year after year. I also hate hills lol.

I went on my first bike camping trip a couple of weeks ago, and it was magical. I had no choice but to climb and climb and climb again; the Elevation wasn't that wild but it was just challenging enough. Since then my love of riding has been renewed and I'm going to give myself the lofty goal of 1,000 miles by January. That will pan out to 914.8 miles after today, so close to 200 miles per month. We will see how that goes! I did ride some before I started tracking but I'm going to challenge myself and not count those miles...but now I gotta start recording every ride!

Some friends and me out rolling around Vancouver island. Here we are headed out of Victoria to Duncan. Really nice, relaxed riding most of the way.

Is it possible to service an electric bike the same as a normal one?

  • One of the great things about cycling is that bikes are easy to maintain. When something wears out you can just buy a new part and the tool and repair it.

Compare that with almost everything else in the world - TVs, cars, boilers, fridges, everything. The spare parts are either patented or proprietary. When you first buy one, you're buying into a lifetime of hassle and expense and drudgery, dealing with tradesmen. It's so bad that most people replace those machines every few years, rather than dealing with the trial of trying to maintain them.

It's so bad that authorities enforce maintenance schedules, because many people just can't face it.

When you buy a bicycle you keep it forever. You and it bare matching scars from your past accidents. You spend summer afternoons caring for it. You gradually modify it until it matches your personality.

A car starts to decay after a few years, you start to hate it. You throw a lot of money into it, then you throw it in the dump and you buy a new one.

  • If you follow the perspective I'm taking, then would you say that electric bicycles are like cars or like bicycles?

It looks like everything electric is proprietary and not standardised - and therefore hard to source and expensive and bad quality. But maybe I'm wrong, or maybe things will change in the near future?

Any bikepackers? I have done a few small, trips less than 4 days, but would like to go longer and maybe bring some others along with me if I can convince them. Any tips or experience bringing enlightenment for going on longer trips?

I like reliable and utilitarian commuter bikes most I think.
