Previously: Submission Statement Edition

Haven't done these in a while, so let's get started.

  1. Since we haven't really heard any feedback one way or the other, rule 8 is now official. To be fair, we've had a lot less microblog posts than I expected (only one Twitter/X post in the last month even after I waited longer than the initial 1-2 weeks expected, and that was a crosspost.)
  • Again, the rules are always a work in progress, feel free to give your two cents here whenever you like.
  1. As you guys know, PipedLinkBot went completely insane 2 days ago and looks like it's temporarily shut down. So, I'd like to use this opportunity to explain why I banned the bot pretty much immediately after our community reopened. (And gloat a bit, of course)
  • Even though I do agree with the principle of using open source, privacy focused frontend instead of using Youtube directly, I have a real problem with using a bot to respond every time somebody posts a Youtube link. It feels like spam, and it doesn't feel like it serves any utility besides pushing an agenda (even though many people here would agree with it). Most people have seen it around here enough to use pipedvideo if they wanted it to use it already.

  • I think it's always been a rage inducing part of the reddit experience that you see you received a response to your comment, but only have it been a bot smugly correcting your grammar or tell you all your letters are in order or something useless like that. So, for this place, I would like to make sure that everyone you talk to here is a real person as much as possible, because people inspire people to be greater, but bots don't.

Android may soon open Captive Portals in an Android Custom Tab instead of a WebView, making it easier to access some public Wi-Fi networks.

Right now, some camera apps on Android aren't able to capture RAW photos, but that's set to change with a new version of the CameraX library.

In a recent update to the HSBC app they've added a screen to prevent you from using the app unless you use the default (google) keyboard.

They do a similar thing if you have an accessibility service running that can access the screens content. A fair enough security warning if you've happened to install a dodgy keyboard app, but highly frustrating when using an open source alternative that enhances the security and privacy over the default option (HeliBoard in my case).

I haven't found a way to circumvent the page yet. It would be useful if Android allowed you to block the permission to query all packages, but alas.

Hi everyone,

I’m not sure if I’m in the right place, but since there isn’t a community like r/androidafterlife on Lemmy, I thought I’d ask here.

I recently saw a video about the Spotify Car Thing being open-sourced, which has led to an interesting project called Deskthing. This got me thinking—are there any similar projects aimed at repurposing older devices?

I’m specifically looking for projects that transform old smartphones into something more functional, rather than just running a standard Android setup with an app. Ideally, I’m interested in projects that can create unique uses for old hardware, like turning a device into an extra PC display that powers on when it detects power through a USB port.

In essence, I’m looking for solutions that bypass the long boot time of stock Android and offer a quick, streamlined experience. If you know of any projects like this, I’d love to hear about them!

Thanks!

The image is from GSM Arena. The phone Infinix has only 45W charge capability yet it does slightly faster than two other phones with much faster charging rates(and same battery capacity).

I know some phones throttle charging speeds but that is usually post 80% threshold. Why the discrepancy then?

Google Photos gets a new Updates feed that lists user activity on shared photos and albums and lets you easily manage shared items.

Hi there!

Using Insular to isolate the few work apps I have on my phone. However I'd like to not receive notifications from these apps outside the 9-5 hours. Anyone know how to do this?

Any tips appreciated 👍

Hi, I'm looking for a way to record voicemails that my recently deceased grandfather sent to my grandmother. Visual voicemail is setup but it does not show the messages, so I can't just save them by sharing them with my phone. Also her SIM is not "nano" format so I can't use it in my fairphone 4 to record it from there

If anyone can recommend a play store app that is not a privacy nightmare, or a way to install f droid on her phone, that would be lovely (even after enabling apks it couldn't open the f-droid apk, I assume because the API on her phone is too outdated)

Edit : nevermind, I remembered that her phone carrier has a web interface with the option to download the messages as a .mp3 file. Thanks to everyone for your replies, recording through jack was also a good idea but it completely went over my head after years of using a phone with no jack

It turns out not every phone with the Snapdragon 8 Elite will actually support UWB, as it's up to device makers to actually enable it.

I like Gcam mod by BSG. But this popup is a bit annoying. Do anybody here also use modded Gcam? If so do you know how to stop this?

Is there a way to manually change GNSS Networks (Galileo, GLONASS, Navstar, BeiDou) on android? Or at least deactivate a specific one? Maybe with root access?

I remember using an app that blocked spam calls using a collaborative database. The one I use now is Truecaller, but it's always trying to get me to subscribe. I liked the one I used before better. What is the best caller ID app that can block spam that you know about?
