Blocking behavior (lemmy.world)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by foggy@lemmy.world to c/lemmyconnect@lemmy.ca

Right now if I block a user, it can disconnect my user within the app from portions of my user presence.

i.e. if I respond to a user in good faith, they respond in bad faith, I block them, and I want to revisit my good faith response in context, I am unable to do so via my profile. If the person I block is the top level comment, I am unable to view any content created within that comment tree because the top level comment is blocked.

I bring this up as Lemmy.world defederates from hexbear, and it has felt like there might be some brigading going on in relation to that.

This might be intentional, or not. Just voicing an opinion that I wish blocking a user would just make all of that users posts show as [blocked] and their username show as [blocked], with an option to temporarily display the blocked content, but still be unable to interact without physically unblocking them. If the "block" was more cosmetic and less functional, it wouldn't disconnect existing functionality (like trying to view my own posts in context).

When using Connect, I don't see all of the comments. I was just looking at a post where the counter showed over 40 comments, but I counted them and only saw about 16. Then I opened up the same post in my web browser and I was able to see all of the comments there.

429

When I try to reply to an existing comments I consistenly get "Error: language_not_allowed"

In a browser I get the option of setting a "Language" of my comment - which then allow me to post my comment. This option doesn't appear to exist in Connect?!?!

When you delete your comment, you will be backed out of the post and see your feed. The problem is if you have "mark posts as read" and "hide read posts" set to true, then the post is hidden and you can't correct what lever mistake you might have been trying to fix, like posting a top level thread rather than a reply.

I like the updated look of spoilers, and the format is improving :)

::: this is incorrect formatting :::

CorrectFormat

imo showing Correct and hiding "Format" should be standard across lemmy ui

Also when i was writing this post, I hit the "eye" to view the markdown version, but it just deleted my "Post body" instead of showing the markdown. When i edit this and hit the markdown button, it reverted any changes made to the post body

Long spoilers seems to not work. Like this

A good chunk of the communities I joined appear empty or sparsely populated, even though I can still follow their updates in other parts of the fediverse (kbin, squabbles etc.). Pushing refresh does nothing. Needless to say, that makes for a very unappealing Frontpage. Might it have something to do with the instances I've blocked or is it something else entirely? Thank you!

an odd little glitch (sh.itjust.works)

Not sure what is going on lol.

it hits that gray zone and that's all she wrote

Currently it seems the sidebar search lists search results from the fediverse, not from my subscribed communities. If I want to go to a specific community, I go to the sidebar. With a lot of subscribed communities you can't favorite all of them, nor do you want to search the entire sidebar list manually

Example: I am subscribed to !space@kbin.social and !space@lemmy.world.

When I search space, neither show up. Instead a bunch of smaller communities are listed, like !space@lemmy.ml, or occult (wtf?).

Hi, thank you everyone for the feedback. This release mostly is just added improvements that have been highly requested. 113 adds draft posts and comments as well as video playback for most video services. I've also added support for ::: spoiler tags ::: (although just a first iteration and I'm still playing with the styling), improved how communities and persons are fetched from remote instances (less API remote object not found errors) and some performance optimizations.

Changes

  • Draft posts and comments
  • inline video player (now muted and doesn't pause other audio sources)
  • better post truncation (ends on a word end when possible)
  • Inbox no longer limited to the first page, added infinite scroll
  • Post list now displays a small page header every 20 posts (clicking jumps to the top)
  • Enabling full usernames (@instance) now uses the username and not the display name
  • Fixed an issue where some comments weren't showing up in large threads.
  • post images now fade in (less flash)
  • Fixed an issue where posting a comment would stay at the edit page

is there a way to deactivate it? can't find anything in the settings and it's driving me mad.

If I try to respond to this comment, I get the language not allowed error:

https://kbin.social/m/games@lemmy.world/t/263669/-/comment/1189646

I checked my lemmy.world account settings through my web browser, and see that my language is set to Undetermined, which I thought was the fix for this.

I can only see a very small portion of my inbox when I go to "View All". The oldest reply I'm able to see is 23 hrs old. I've been receiving replies for about a month.

When I submit a comment, the edit window stays open. I then get prompted to Stay or Leave the comment, even though it's already been submitted. Is there a way to disable that behaviour?

Clicking on a video post now seems to download the video.

I have the setting of using external browser enabled

Hey, fellow Lemmy users!

As I enjoy the app's features and lively discussions, I'd like to raise a suggestion that I believe could enhance our browsing experience even further.

Currently, Connect employs infinite scrolling, which automatically loads new content as we reach the end of the current page. While this offers a seamless browsing experience, it can also lead to some challenges. Some of us have noticed that browsing for an extended period might become overwhelming, especially when there's a significant amount of content to scroll through. Additionally, it might impact performance and consume excessive data.

Therefore, I'd like to propose the implementation of a limit on infinite scrolling. Here's how it could work:

  1. Introduce Pagination: Instead of an endless scroll, we could have the option to load content in paginated blocks. This way, we can navigate through pages, making it easier to keep track of the content we've already seen.

  2. User-Defined Scrolling Limit: Allowing users to customize the number of posts loaded per scroll or setting a maximum limit on the number of posts loaded would give us greater control over our browsing experience.

  3. Lazy Loading: Implementing a lazy loading mechanism could be an excellent solution, where additional content is fetched only when we scroll near the end of the page, thus reducing initial load time and improving performance.

By adding these features, we can strike a perfect balance between fluid browsing and control over content consumption. It will enhance user satisfaction, especially for those like me who struggle with infinite scrolling and time managing.

What do you all think about this proposal? Your feedback and opinions matter! Let's discuss this idea together.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts

After the latest video player beta update, listening to my podcast is impossible when scrolling as it pauses whatever is playing if there is a video playing. The video on the screen is muted, so i think it should allow my music to continue. Is there any way you could fix that? Thanks!

Galaxy s23. Cannot change volume. Have to leave the app, change volume, and come back.

If you don't scroll fast enough, your initial tap to scroll will also vote on posts

A few times lately someone has replied to me and I click on their comment in my inbox to reply back. It takes me to the thread, but only shows a parent or sibling comment, not the reply that was in the inbox. But if I go back to the inbox and click on their profile, I see the comment in their history.

Most recently, this happened to a comment from Azzy@beehaw.org. They sent me a reply telling me about a containers plugin in Firefox and I just want to reply back thanking them for the tip.

Is this a real bug, or is it an artifact of how some instances are not federated with others?

Edit: Link doesn't seem to lead to their account. Am I linking it wrong?

Hi there!

I'm using connect for lemmy and one thing that bugs me is when using the WebView instead of an external browser. It somehow makes the scrolling way too difficult (you have to really exaggerate your movements to actually scroll).

Can this be fixed?

The workaround for now is enabling the external browser to open links.

I really like the app though!

Cannot post any comments whatsoever, I get a "language not allowed" prompt. What am I doing wrong here?

Feature: Horizontal swipe for next post (experimental)
Version: 1.0.108

I'm super happy to have found a Lemmy app with the "swipe for next post" feature, and I wanted to provide two suggestions to make this feature even better:

  1. I think it would be more intuitive if the "swiping back" gesture went to the previous post, rather than out to the main scroll feed.

  2. As I don't use swiping gestures on comments, I would find it useful if the "swipe for next post" area were extended to include the comments section when comment swipe actions are disabled.

I hope this feedback is helpful. Many thanks to the developers for such an already great Lemmy app!

It'd be better to be able to track the bugs and features being suggested in a real issue tracker. The Lemmy format isn't a great place to track and organize these suggestions.

If you want the app to remain closed source, you can create a GitHub repo with a README.md, and simply use its issue tracker. There are a lot of options, but this is a popular one.
