the tiktok exodus is widely known! for those of you who don't know, i am in high school. i can't count with my hands how many people have talked about it, and that's just in the two classes i had yesterday (exam week, yay). i've already gotten 2 people to download it. they both made accounts and use it now! it's broken the niche internet thing into the real world, at the very least for young people.

on the app front, lots of americans are posting things like "we've been lied to, china isn't that bad!" i've come across so many americans learning about chinese culture and responding positively to patriotic or socialist posts from chinese netizens. it's insane, i'm really amazed at how, for at least a good chunk of americans, china is becoming less demonized.

I really used to enjoy /r/datahoarders. Except for how right wing it was. Too much focused around the interests of white, male, anglo, north american, cis, het, rich, etc etc. Libertarian. Occasionally in the best way, more commonly in the worst ways.

Is there any such communities which are more expansive than archiving every Nirvana bootleg or getting the most hi quality version of The Simpsons? Or any interest in such a thing?

I suspect these rumors have been spread by feds who dont like Americans seeing China outside their own media spin. Ive seen the rumors around a lot and it seems it isnt the case according to users within China.

This is a blatant attempt at damage control by the west imo. Convince people the chinese are blocking them and try to undo the damage thats been done to their narrative. Hopefully people dont fall for it. I worry it will stop more people from checking out the app tho.

one thing most any leftist will say about china despite supporting the country is that they're a very traditionalist culture, and so LGBTQ issues in particular are a blight on leftist westerner's otherwise positive view of china.

upon scrolling thru rednote, i think that's bullshit now. i really don't think you're worse off being LGBTQ in china than you are in america. yeah, you can't get married, but that right is under constant threat of being taken away in the US anyway and let's be real- it probably will be taken away. meanwhile, china is making progress on that front, the US wants to regress.

i saw multiple LGBTQ people on rednote. i saw a lesbian couple, one of the girls even said "LGBT is completely normal in china now, especially in the cities. even the older generations who might not accept it mind their own business". can that be said about america? how many queer people here have been accosted by some boomer who couldn't mind their own business? i saw the gayest fucking dude i've ever seen in my life (that's a compliment). he was also wearing makeup and sassily singing along with destiny's child. completely comfortable in his skin and with his identity, and while all of the comments and his speaking were in mandarin that i couldn't understand, you can tell by the vibe it was all positive. meanwhile in progressive america, if you're a guy who wants to put on makeup and go live on tiktok you're gonna face all sorts of homophobia and bigotry.

one of the few things western liberals could really say about china, that even those of us who are left wing and pro china thought to be at least somewhat true, appears to just straight up not be true.

It's nothing more delightful than being in a room of 20-30 two-stepping kids. I sort of forgot I taught them a while ago, but we had bananas for snack today and we finished early so I put on 'Banana' by the Aggrolites from Yo Gaba Gaba and they all busted it down two-step style. I forgot that was the song I had taught them to two-step to earlier in the school year. It was an immense delight.

i noticed they stopped putting the Breakfast club of canada logo on the egg cartons at the grocery store, and scrubbed any images of it from the Net. Probably because they knew I was thinking about making this post soon. This post would have worked a lot better if I had a pic of those egg cartons
