The U.S. is concerned that targeting Russia’s energy facilities will impact the Kremlin’s oil production capacity and drive up global prices — ahead of a knife-edge presidential election where prices at the gas pump are bound to be a contentious topic.

The sources also fear that these repeated strikes will provoke Russia into retaliating and targeting energy infrastructure the West relies on, including oil pipelines.

According to Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olha Stefanishyna, Ukrainian officials have said that oil refineries are “absolutely legitimate targets from a military point of view.”

The US should probably pass their lethal aid package if they want a seat at the table.

"Hey guys we know you're dying and all, but can you please think of the economy?!"

What a bunch of buffoons.

Did they let Ken Paxton do the communication on this one?

those attacks are propably very helpful for the transition to renewables. just sayan

I was thinking the same thing. Climate change won't make them take action on fossil fuels, but fuck around with politics and now they have a "legitimate" reason to do something.

"You treat them like animals, that's exactly how they'll behave."

This fits aptly here in my opinion. If you want Ukraine to play by your rules, you have to givethem the tools to do so. Otherwise they will do whatever they can to keep up the pressure without your support and without your rules.

Fuck it. Blow them all to hell and go after their rail infrastructure as well.

Pipelines in the middle of nowhere. It brings the joy of ecological contamination.

[–] TransplantedSconie@lemm.ee 17 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Nope. Refineries are where it's at. Expensive as fuck and hard to replace.

[–] Badeendje@lemmy.world 11 points 8 months ago

For sure.. extremely large, extremely vulnerable, impossible to replace equipment and they bring their own flammables in high quantities.

Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Mykhailo Podolyak, stated this is fake news:

(Podolyak) denied the reports that the United States supposedly demanded from the Ukrainian side to refrain from striking Russian oil infrastructure, calling them "fake information." https://newsukraine.rbc.ua/news/ukraine-denies-us-requested-to-halt-strikes-1711118430.html

Podolyak’s comments, forwarded to POLITICO by the office of Ukraine Energy Minister German Galushchenko, were in contrast to earlier reports by the Financial Times that the U.S. had urged the Eastern European nation to refrain from attacks on major energy infrastructure for fear of sending oil prices skyrocketing and prompting retaliation from the Kremlin. https://www.politico.com/news/2024/03/22/ukraine-says-west-not-pressuring-it-to-end-attacks-on-russian-oil-facilities-00148673

Only reason I can think for Ukraine to listen is to not end up with the US run by a pro Russian asset, and even then that's just, "Wait til after the election"

And even that isn't a good reason since Russia should be getting flat out blockaded, so their oil shouldn't even BE in the calculation

Give weapons or get fucked.

  • Ukraine probably
[–] Hopfgeist@feddit.de 10 points 8 months ago

Bloody bigots (if true). This is a desperate measure by Ukraine, from which the UAF actually refrained as long as the US supported them!

Now they don't and they don't.

So give them the means for a meaningful defense (and offensive) on their own land, and they won't have to resort to strategic bombing. (Or droning, or cruise-missiling, or whatever it's called.)

I know these are different parts of the government, but still.

What the fuck is this kind of rhetoric?

[–] Hacksaw@lemmy.ca 2 points 8 months ago

Well it's not nonsense. If Ukraine does something that helps Trump get elected everyone's fucked. He'll immediate stop supplying Ukraine and start sucking Putin off.

The US isn't saying we'll punish you if you keep doing this, they're just warning them that this can have undesired effects.

Personally, I think we should all accept some pain and just do a full trade embargo on Russia and Israel until they put their military back in their countries where they belong.

[–] sin_free_for_00_days@sopuli.xyz 5 points 8 months ago

Last time I looked, the US exported more oil than it imported.

[–] JackLSauce@lemmy.world 3 points 8 months ago

Well if it means 50 cents less per gallon shouldn't we ~~appease~~ ~~capitualte~~ negotiate ~~(like Pregozhin)~~

[–] Sir_Fridge@lemmy.world 3 points 8 months ago

On one hand, fuck em. Blow it all up! Helps us going green.

On the other hand I already struggle to afford petrol and I'm physically unable to take another transportation method.
