Title is a reference to Resistance imagery about how Israeli soldiers will enter Gaza alive but leave it in coffins - the same is true for American soldiers in the Middle East if the regional war expands.

The image is of the Fattah-1 Iranian hypersonic ballistic missile, which its creators boast can overcome any missile defense system on the planet, has a range of 1400 kilometers (and thus Iran can strike Israel), and has a terminal impact velocity of Mach 13.

Dozens of American soldiers have been injured and 3 have been killed on a base in the Middle East. There has been confused reports about whether the attack was on Syrian territory or Jordan's - the Al-Tanf base is in Syria, but Tower-22 in Jordan is another base that helps supply Al-Tanf, and Tower-22 is the one that is alleged to have been hit. These is the first confirmed deaths of American troops since the conflict began, though it's not likely that this is actually the first deaths after hundreds of drone/missile strikes throughout the region on American bases, unless you think American soldiers are having extremely timely heart attacks just after a missile hits.

The attack is certainly impactful, though it does also have considerably symbolism. Courtesy of John Helmer:

The operational success of the strike for the attackers is strategic. Tower-22 is a logistics, supply, and rear guard post for the Al-Tanf base which US troops are operating thirty kilometres north across the border in Syria. The attack demonstrates that both Tower-22 and Al-Tanf, Jordan and Syria, are newly vulnerable to weapons which the US forces have failed to detect and neutralize. Just as significantly, the massive US airbase called Muwaffaq Salti, 230 kilometres west across Jordan, is also vulnerable now.

It indicates that Iran now possesses Russian expertise in countering American equipment:

“This is a significant accomplishment,” one of the sources said. “Was the bypassing of the US air defence system at Tower-22 pulled off with Russian assistance? US bases generally rely on the C-RAM [Counter Rocket, Artillery and Mortar] system. It was sent to Ukraine last year where the Russians have been learning to defeat it. What now of American EW [electronic warfare]? They’ve been doing a fair job of knocking drones down up to now. It seems a ‘coincidence’ that, not a week after the meetings in Moscow with Arabs and Iranians, we see this success. It’s a success the circumstances of which, we can be sure, Biden and Austin are not keen to advertise.”

I am putting my take on the table right now: I am 99% certain that the US won't attack Iran directly. I think we are still quite a while away from that being a possibility. Much more likely is that Iranian officials in Iraq or Syria will be hit by a retaliatory strike, as Israel has done recently. It is a significant escalation nonetheless. And it comes as Israel seems to be gearing up for a suicidal war with Hezbollah.

The Country of the Week is Iran! Feel free to chime in with books, essays, longform articles, even stories and anecdotes or rants. More detail here.

Updates continue to be AWOL - but I am cooking something. Hopefully.

From the "fucking horrifying news" section, several LGBTQ+ support nonprofits here have recently revealed that France has now started discreetly keeping a registry of trans people (article is in French, sorry).

They're alimenting it by snooping on the civil process that allows one to change their gender officially; and it's specifically aimed at being accessed by cops - and transphobia is unsurprisingly rampant among police in France.

Guys, New Communist Party just dropped kkkanada

A New Party is Born: Founding Announcement of the (New) Communist Party of Canada

Today, we announce the formation of the (New) Communist Party of Canada (the (N)CPC), the succesful completion of its Founding Congress, and the public release of its Political Program.

The new Party is announced today, but it was not born today. The (N)CPC was born in clandestinity over two years ago, in 2021, after the protracted Unity-Struggle Process of 2020-21 succeeded in rallying communist revolutionaries from across Canada, old and new, with many veterans of what we have come to calling the “third,” and even some from what we are calling the “second,” communist party-building movements in Canada, alongside a great many newer, younger proletarian revolutionaries who were only too ready to carry forward the torch of proletarian revolution in the world today.

they appear to be maoist, of which variant im not sure yet, i dont think they are gonzalites since they normaly name drop him alongside marx, lenin and mao

The Political Program of the (New) Communist Party of Canada

this is their program on a quick glance it looks fine, a funny line about quebec people in the nations of canada sections, but they seem fine, hopefull they will be an ok communist party since the biggest ML one collapsed after trying to hide SA within its ranks.

Their ideology: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Japaneseism

The so-called "final solution" of Anti-Japaneseism is to wipe the nation called "Japan" from the face of the earth and exterminate the Japanese race. Because, as described in the above historical theory, Japan is inherently evil, the continued existence of Japanese people is incompatible with peace.

Damn.

I wanted to look up some stuff about the GDR but the "DdR DiKtaTuR" Spam is killing me, like germany has 7 different think tanks and 3 ministrys about how horrific and criminal the GDR was. Literally every state in Germany, even the western states have some kind of institute that is propagating there shit fascist opinion about the GDR. No commune has money for school equipment but if a random village wants an fucking "Landesstelle für politische Bildung und Totalitarismusforschung" they get more money than they did ask for. Whatever, we will win again and it will be better. We will have old heroes like Thälmann and Honecker in mind and new ones on our side. Thälmann ist niemals gefallen!

Growth of industrial production in 2023 for the most important types of products. Comparison with 2022. The numbers are telling. Of course, there is a decline in production. For example, the production of internal combustion engines is minus 11% at the end of the year. This is a huge failure. But in general, the War, the Turn to the East and Sanctions are still providing the industry with orders.

  • production of navigation devices +75%;
  • equipment for the production of bakery products +70%;
  • buses weighing up to 5 tons +67.9%;
  • radio equipment +32.3%;
  • mainline diesel locomotives +32.2%;
  • fiber cables +30.9%;
  • finished metal products, except machinery and equipment +27.8% (this group includes the production of weapons and ammunition);
  • computers +27.3%;
  • bearings +27%;
  • freight cars +26.6%;
  • other vehicles and equipment +25.5%;
  • batteries +21.9%;
  • cars +19%.

Russia finally re-industrializes not because of domestic pressure, but because of NATO imperialism. This is one of those strange events that I would never have believed if you told me this just a few years ago.

They defeated the Soviet Union - now they will heal: “In the Lviv region, the last remaining Soviet monument there, standing in the cemetery in the Lopatin community, was demolished. The head of the regional military administration reported on the destruction of the monument, boasting that the Lviv region was the first in Ukraine to complete the process that they call decommunization. By the beginning of 2022, more than 2,500 monuments had been demolished in the country, over 900 settlements and approximately 50 thousand streets had been renamed. Later in Ukraine they began to liquidate everything connected with Russia: monuments, bas-reliefs, place names.”

Very normal country.

By the way, this is also why I absolutely support present day Russia using Soviet symbols when it comes to defeating Nazis, even if you call them cynical propaganda. At least the Russians are not trying to re-write history. If anything, they made the USSR appeared righteous.

https://www.axios.com/2024/02/01/biden-israel-settler-violence-palestinians-executive-order

Does this have literally ANY material effect on Israeli settlers?

Details: The first round of sanctions under the new executive order includes four Israeli settlers who the U.S. said were directly involved in attacks against Palestinians in the West Bank and systematic acts that led to the forced displacement of Palestinian communities.

They include David Chai Chasdai, who the U.S. says initiated and led a riot in a Palestinian village, Einan Tanjil, who is accused of assaulting Palestinian famers, Shalom Zicherman, who the U.S. alleges assaulted Israeli activists in the West Bank, and Yinon Levi, who the State Department says has repeatedly attacked several communities in the West Bank.

None of those named or their representatives immediately commented on the sanctions.

The settlers' assets and bank accounts in the U.S. will be frozen and no one will be allowed to trade or transfer them money through the U.S. financial system.

The executive order also allows the administration to impose sanctions on additional individuals who directed or participated in acts or threats of violence against Palestinian civilians, intimidated Palestinian civilians causing them to leave their homes, destroyed or seized property of Palestinian civilians, or were involved in acts of terrorism against Palestinian civilians.

It allows the administration to sanction leaders or government officials directly or indirectly involved in violence against Palestinians. The executive order makes clear that individuals who are "directing, enacting, implementing and enforcing or failing to enforce policies that threaten the peace, security and stability in the West Bank" could be sanctioned.

Do these settlers actually use the american financial system in any way at all?

Just look at this bastard. This is Macron's freshly appointed new prime minister; a long-time friend of the presidential couple. This is someone that of course went to the bourgeois private schools in Paris but also and funnier specifically filed papers when younger in order to be able to add his mother's noble particle ("de Couriss") to his name in order to, one assumes, feel like an authentic pre-French-revolution noble.

Anyway, that particular imbecile just did his first "general policy" speech in the French congress; in it:

  • He very regularly expressed his desire to induce "respect of authority" among the young; saying insane shit like "I am convinced transmission of knowledge is only possible through deep respect for authority, and our republican values, and of course secularism" or "authority must be respected everywhere: in classrooms, in the family, in the streets".
  • There's a thing in france called the RSA - it's not exactly basic income but it's what you can get when your unemployment runs out (with deeply horrible conditions and snooping that would deserve a comment of their own); recently those morons started an "experiment" in several regions where they force people receiving it to work 15 hours a week, unpaid, in order to keep receiving it. The bastard announced in the same speech they will now put that measure into effect country-wide soon, without waiting for the results of the cruel "experiment".
  • There was also an intermediate help you could receive between unemployment running out and the thing I talked about above; they're removing it entirely
  • He quickly said that in the context of climate change, "degrowth would never be acceptable because it would destroy our incredibly generous welfare system", basically; more generally the economics stuff was basically your usual neoliberal software, except taken to eleven.

And the same awful bastard is rumored to be, on top of Macron's puppet, his planned successor (him not being able to run again due to term limits).

https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/biden-facing-growing-pressure-response-iran-deadly-drone/story?id=106773572

The U.S. response to the drone attack twill be carried out "over the course of several days," striking "multiple targets," a U.S. official told ABC News.

"These are going to be very deliberate targets -- deliberate strikes on facilities that enabled these attacks" on U.S. forces, the official said.

Also on Tuesday, the Iran-backed Hezbollah Brigades -- based in Iraq -- different from Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon -- said it would suspend its military operations against U.S. forces in Iraq.

"As we announce the suspension of military and security operations against the occupation forces -- in order to prevent embarrassment to the Iraqi government we will continue to defend our people in Gaza in other ways ... " a statement from the group said.

Strikes against facilities that enabled these attacks... Does this mean strikes on Iranian drone and weapons factories? That would be quite the escalation.

Also lol at burgerland news doing the whole "Iran backed Hezbollah" and having to point out to the reader that the brigades in Iraq are not the same as those in Lebanon. Americans really do have the most propagandistic and dumbed down news on earth.

Also the ? in the link shared is not a tracker, it's the story ID for the URL.

https://www.craigmurray.org.uk/archives/2024/01/has-international-law-survived-or-has-the-western-political-class-killed-it/

Highly recommended reading the full article on South Africa's case of genocide against Israel by Craig Murray, it clears up all misconceptions on the ICJ ruling against Israel and dismisses all Israeli propaganda points. I will post key excerpts in the spoiler tag below.

click here to read the excerpts

In finding there is a plausible case [of genocide] against Israel, the International Court of Justice treated with contempt the argument from Israel that the case should be dismissed as it is exercising its right of self-defence. This argument took up over half of Israel’s pleadings. Not only did the court find there is a plausible case of genocide, the court only mentioned self-defence once in its interim ruling – and that was merely to note that Israel had claimed it.

That the ICJ has not affirmed Israel’s right to self-defence is perhaps the most important point in this interim order. It is the dog that did not bark. The argument which every western leader has been using is spurned by the ICJ.

Now the ICJ did not repeat that an occupying power has no right of self-defence. It did not need to. It simply ignored Israel’s specious assertion.

... What struck me most about the ICJ ruling was that the Order went into far more detail about the evidence of genocide than it needed to. Its description was stark... The reason this is so crucial, is that the Court is not saying that South Africa asserts this. The Court is saying these are the facts. It is a finding of fact by the Court."

The Court then goes on to detail accounts by the United Nations of the factual situation, quoting three different senior officials at length, including Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner General of UNRWA ... This of course explains why the immediate response to the ICJ ruling was a coordinated attack by Israel and the combined imperialist powers on UNRWA, designed to accelerate the genocide by stopping aid, to provide a propaganda counter-narrative to the ICJ judgment, and to reduce the credibility of UNRWA’s evidence before the court.

The Court spent a great deal of time outlining the facts of the unfolding genocide in the Gaza Strip. It did not have to do so in nearly so much detail, and far too little attention has been paid to this. I was equally surprised by how much detail the court gave on the evidence of genocidal intent by Israel.

It is especially humiliating for Israel that the Court quoted the Israeli Head of State, the President of Israel himself, as giving clear evidence of genocidal intent, along with two other government ministers.

Again, this is not the Court saying that South Africa has alleged this. It is a finding of fact by the Court. The ICJ has already found to be untrue Israel’s denial in court of incitement to genocide... President Herzog made a genocidal statement, as determined by the International Court of Justice

When you take the detail of what the Court has found to be the actual facts of the case, in death and destruction and in intent, I have no doubt that this is a court which is currently minded to find Israel guilty of genocide once the substantive case comes before the Court

All of Israel’s arguments were lost. Every one. The substantial effort Israel put into having the case dismissed on procedural grounds was brushed aside. So was self-defence. And in its findings of the facts, the Court plainly found to be untrue the Israeli lies about avoidance of civilian casualties, the responsibility of Hamas for the damage to infrastructure, and the access of relief aid to Gaza. Those are the facts of what happened.

Do not be confused by the absence of the word “ceasefire” from the Court order. What the Court has ordered is very close to that. It has explicitly ordered the Israeli military to stop killing Palestinians.*... That is absolutely clear. And while I accept it is tautologous, in the sense it is ordering Israel to obey a Convention which Israel is already bound to follow, there could be no clearer indication that the Court believes that Israel is not currently obeying it.

I doubt the United States will veto... It is difficult to both claim that Israel somehow won, and at the same time seek to block UNSC enforcement of the Order. My suspicion is that there will be a continuing dual track: pretending that there is no genocide and Israel is obeying the “unnecessary” order, while at the same time attacking and ridiculing the ICJ and the wider UN.

No matter what the ICJ said, Israel would not have stopped the genocide; that is the simple truth. The immediate reaction of the US and allies to the Order has been to try to accelerate the genocide by crippling the UN’s aid relief work. I confess I did not expect anything quite that vicious and blatant.

Most targeted sites completely evacuated before aggression

The spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces, Yahya Rasool Abdullah, stated that the cities of al-Qaim and the Iraqi border areas were subjected to air “strikes” by US aircraft, adding that these “strikes” come at a time when Iraq is striving to ensure the stability of the region. He emphasized that these "strikes" flagrantly violate Iraqi sovereignty, undermine the efforts of the Iraqi government, and pose a significant threat that could drag Iraq and the region into highly undesirable consequences. He underscored that the ramifications of these actions would be severe, particularly jeopardizing the security and stability of both Iraq and the region.

An official from the Iraqi Ministry of Interior informed AFP that, based on preliminary information, the American "strike" targeted a warehouse for light weapons. Concurrently, an official from the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces, speaking to the same agency, emphasized that the bombing in the al-Qaim area did not lead to any casualties.

Sources to Al Mayadeen confirm that most targeted sites had been evacuated before the aggression.

As a result of the aggression, Al Mayadeen's correspondent in Aleppo reported that electricity had been completely cut off in Deir Ezzor.

Deeply silly stuff from the US here. Like most military actions nowadays, the narrative is seen as more important than the actual impact. No fucking shit that warning groups days ahead of a strike would lead to them moving equipment around. Announcing your targets before you strike them is Ukraine-level dipshittery.

"Yeah, I don't think these groups that have been bombed for the last couple decades will have developed any countermeasures to being bombed yet." Every day, I am thankful for American military incompetence.

US ‘must not provide another dollar’ for Israel’s war: Bernie Sanders antler-bernie

The progressive US senator has called for ending Washington’s funding for “the horrific war against the Palestinian people”.

“For the sake of the Palestinian people and our own standing in the world we must not provide another dollar for the Netanyahu war machine,” Sanders said in a statement.

His comments come as the US House of Representatives prepares to pass a $17.6bn aid package for Israel, which stands accused of genocide at the International Court of Justice.

https://www.dw.com/en/ukraine-terror-case-against-russia-largely-rejected-by-icj/a-68134988

The United Nations' top court on Wednesday ruled that Russia had partially violated an anti-terrorism treaty by failing to investigate the funding of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine, including those who shot down Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 in 2014.

However, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) declined to rule on whether Russia bore responsibility for the downing of the civilian aircraft and refused to order that Moscow pay compensation to victims as requested by Kyiv.

The court ruled that under the terms of the international convention on terrorism financing, only cash transfers could be considered support for alleged terrorist groups.

The ICJ opinion said, this "does not include the means used to commit acts of terrorism, including weapons or training camps."

"Consequently," the opinion continued, "the alleged supply of weapons to various armed groups operating in Ukraine... fall outside the material scope" of the anti-terrorism financing convention.

Ultimately, the ICJ rejected most of Ukraine's pleas, finding only that Russia was, "failing to take measures to investigate facts... regarding persons who have allegedly committed an offense."

An ICJ statement said the court "rejects all other submissions made by the Ukraine."

US and UK hit Houthis in fresh air strikes against Iran-backed militias | Financial Times

US forces have carried out a second phase of air strikes in response to the deaths of three American troops in Jordan last weekend, this time hitting targets in Yemen where Iranian-backed Houthi rebels have wreaked havoc on commercial shipping.

The US, joined by the UK, hit 36 Houthi targets in Yemen across 13 locations on Saturday, a day after it struck Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps targets in Iraq and Syria, according to the Pentagon.

Our aim remains to de-escalate tensions and restore stability in the Red Sea but let us reiterate our warning to Houthi leadership: we will not hesitate to continue to defend lives and the free flow of commerce in one of the world’s most critical waterways in the face of continued threats,” the US, UK and six other nations said in a joint statement.

Saturday’s strikes targeted Houthi weapons storage facilities, missile systems and launchers, air defences and radars, according to the statement. The US, sometimes acting with the UK, began striking Houthi targets on January 11 but the rebel group has continued its attacks on international vessels.

“This collective action sends a clear message to the Houthis that they will continue to bear further consequences if they do not end their illegal attacks on international shipping and naval vessels,” US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a statement.

Iran and Iraq warned earlier on Saturday that the US strikes could trigger greater instability across the region.

US President Joe Biden is trying to deter the continued targeting of American service members while avoiding being pulled into a full-on regional war. Since mid-October, Iranian-backed groups have launched more than 160 attacks on American troops in Iraq, Syria and Jordan.

Last weekend’s drone attack on a US military base in Jordan was the first to kill American forces since the war between Israel and Hamas began, raising the risk of escalation.

The US said it struck 85 targets at 7 sites on Friday. The Iraqi government said on Saturday that 16 people, including civilians, were killed in the attacks. The Syrian military said “many civilian and military martyrs” were killed, but did not provide any other details.

The US has also become more involved in the Red Sea, where Iranian-backed Houthis have launched more than 39 attacks on commercial and military vessels transiting the crucial waterway.

The US has already conducted more than 12 strikes in Yemen to deter the Houthis from launching more attacks, which the rebel group says will continue so long as Israel is attacking Gaza.

The most recent strike against Houthi targets, which officials described as opportunistic, took place earlier on Saturday when the US military hit six anti-ship cruise missiles it said were preparing to launch against ships in the Red Sea.

Washington blamed last weekend’s drone attack on the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a shadowy umbrella group believed to include Kataib Hizbollah, an Iraqi Shia militia, as well as other militants that have claimed responsibility for the attacks against US troops in Iraq and Syria.

The IRI is part of Iran’s so-called Axis of Resistance, a network of militant groups which includes the Houthis in northern Yemen and Hizbollah in Lebanon.

in the UK, the courts have published the names of the two children (Scarlett Jenkinson and Eddie Ratcliffe) who killed a transgender girl (Brianna Ghey) last year. generally that doesn't happen except in exceptional circumstances

the defence for Eddie are using the fact that he's autistic in his defence and claiming he has developed selective mutism (I don't know what that's meant to show or prove). they are also really trying hard to downplay the transphobia involved.

I think Scarlett's defence otoh is conceding a lot of the transphobia etc because in her messages she is much more explicit about it and was generally the more obviously sadistic of the two

the judge is meant to begin her sentencing remarks soon, not sure what she's going to be saying exactly but everyone's kinda waiting on that atm

I read an opinion piece (though not obvious it was opinion and not news) on CNN that did the thing where they asked “why isn’t Biden getting credit for the awesome economy?”

In the op-ed, the author cited three economic measures:

  1. Unemployment %
  2. Stock market prices
  3. GDP growth

Just incredible analysis there. All three of those measures are the ones people go to when they don’t actually understand economics (I didn’t check the author’s credentials, probably just a journalist but you don’t actually need an econ background the know why these measures are bad). #1 is deeply flawed as, for example, people who give up looking for work or can’t find a job in enough time aren’t counted. Of course, the bigger issue is it doesn’t consider the quality of jobs that people have. If you used to work one job and now you work two to make ends meet, that doesn’t show up here.

#2 is so bad and I’m sure I don’t even need to explain why to this crowd.

#3 is kinda like #1 in that it’s such an overly broad measure, it doesn’t tell you how growth is split between classes. If there’s growth but that growth is captured entirely by capitalists, who cares? Not to mention there’s all sorts of calculation issues with using GDP as a measure of the health of the real economy.

The libs are so transparent in what they are trying to do. They know the health of the economy sucks and that this could very well cost Biden the election, so they’re desperate to paint a picture with whatever they can.
