I LOVE Alfonso Cuarón’s sci-fi action movie Children of Men. I’ve watched maybe six times and every time, the ending always almost brings me to tears. So when I learned it was adapted from P.D. James’ book of the same name, it was a no-brainer deciding what my next book would be.

After finishing the book, it wasn’t difficult to reach to the conclusion that I enjoyed the movie better.

While James’ book gives a more in-depth look at how human infertility and humanity’s slow death march towards extinction affects the sexual dynamic between men and women and almost demented ways humans try to cope with a world without children or a race of dead men walking, I feel the book dedicates WAY too much time describing the failing of human civilization and the Regrets and guilt of Theo Faron. It’s not even until after 2/3 through the book where it feels like the plot and story are properly paced and stuff of consequence actually begin to happen.

The film’s adaptation by, comparison, feels consistent in its pacing and the world building and woe-is-mes of Theo feel more compact a take up less of the audience’s time.

What books do you feel were worse than its film adaptation and why?

Jaws wasn’t a very fun read

Worse makes it seem like a much wider gap, but Howl’s Moving Castle is just so adorable movie form, there’s way more magic and it is a classic for a reason!

Stardust.

The book was fine, but the movie was better.

"Cora Unashamed" and "Billy Budd" interesting enough they're novellas.

Just finished Escape from Alcatraz and enjoyed the movie more.

Also as a guilty pleasure movie The 13th Warrior was better than the book Eaters of the Dead.

If you want an even better take on the Children of Men scenario, Brian Aldiss' Greybeard is miles better. James bloodily ripped it off.

To answer you question, Stephen King's Shawshank Redemption was a good book, but doesn't hold a candle to the movie.

Hanibal - didn’t care for Lecter and Clarice running off together

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep - Blade Runner was much better

Tapping the Source - point Break much better. Surfing bank robbers over surfers make snuff porn films

Under the Tuscan Sun is my comfort movie that I watch when I'm sick or sad so I thought I'd like the book. I knew there were a lot of changes so that was ok but my God it was boring. Just someone with too much money giving too many details about fixing up their vacation home. Good recipes though

Killing Eve the TV show is way better than Codename Villanelle, the book it's based on.

Like 1000× better. The author just can't write.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, the performances just elevate it on such a deeper level, book is still pretty good.

I am so sorry to all the people in the world so much smarter than me that love this book.

But the answer is The Last of the Mohicans

No Country for Old Men. Saw the movie in theaters and thought it was great, so intense and chilling. Then I had to read it in a literature course in college. I was excited for it, but it was excruciating. I just couldn’t get into the writing style. I’ve considered trying The Road, but I’m afraid that it will also be soul-sucking.

The Last of the Mohicans, although I never managed to trudge all the way through it. Mark Twain’s parody is superb.

Fight Club 😳 I’ve read many Chuck Palahniuk books since and it’s one of my least favourites……..Still my favourite movie though!

Not a movie, but The Boys, the comic is just not good, the show is written a lot better.

Last of the Mohicans

It was a shitty movie but it was SO MUCH BETTER than the book which was so unspeakably horrible no one should ever have to suffer through it, or really anything by Fenimore Cooper. Dude was one of the most godawful terrible writers ever to disgrace the English language. It's like the Voogon poetry of mid-19th century action adventure novels.

Babe, the Gallant Pig. I bought the book in elementary school at a Scholastic Book Fair and did not like it all. I was mad I had wasted my money on a lousy book! The movie came out when I was in college and I couldn't believe they had turned that turd of a book into a good movie! Lol!

The Neverending Story. The movie is much better

120 days of Sodom

[–] Longjumping-Coast-27@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

They were both quite good, but I prefer Stalker over Roadside Picnic. Using the word "Worse" might not be appropriate.

Starship Troopers

The neverending story is a magical movie that stops at the book’s halfway point….with cause.

Not exactly a movie, but I watched Wicked on Broadway and I thought it was such an amazing twist to see the "Wicked" Witch's side of the story. So I got the book and boy, all the charm and wit and heart that I enjoyed from the musical just dragged down with politics and depressing thoughts about social hierarchy...It was really trying to do something hyper-intellectual. So whoever read that book and made a lovely broadway show - hats off to you!

The Mist… but you have to understand it’s 100% for the ending only. Won’t spoil it but even King loved the movie ending far better than his own… was a lot darker and left me going, oh ok here’s the part where they… WHOA WAIT WHAT THE F… wow. Damn. Made me love the movie and hate the book ending.

It’s been a while since I last tried but I did not enjoy Wicked as a book and I really enjoy the musical. I read the book as a teenager and it made me feel very uncomfortable with how dark it got.

Princess diaries

In the first book, she’s a freshman and talks about not being able to use the home internet and landline simultaneously. In the last book, she’s having her 18th birthday party with President Obama in attendance and has a smartphone.

Arrival.
The book goes much more into the concepts but the presentation of the aliens is pretty lackluster. The movie is much better at conveying a sense of awe.

[–] MadPatagonian@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I agree, though the comparison isn’t apt IMO. Chiang’s was a short story, right? The movie is certainly better, but if I wonder what would’ve come to be if Chiang made it a novel.
