A place to politely discuss the tools, technique and culture of photography.

This is not a good place to simply share cool photos/videos or promote your own work and projects, but rather a place to discuss photography as an art and post things that would be of interest to other photographers.

I used to watch people like the Northrups, Thomas Weaton or Kai Wong, but it starts to be repetitive watching them all the time. Do you have any youtubers that are not cringe and add some value to this hobby?

The one who helped me the most to appreciate going out and shoot and enjoying the process is Faizal Westcott. He also matches my personality. I also love watching Mike Chudley, Pat Kay (especially for his composition videos) & KingJvpes for film photography 😌

[–] jonathanlurker@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Grainydays. He's a funny and informational film photography channel

[–] CreativePenguin715@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

i haven’t seen him mentioned but grainydays! i love to have him in the background of me doing home work as well just to listen to him talk! he has really great work and it feels like you’re listening to a friend talk about their endeavors

Alan Schaller

[–] fragileNotFragil@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Scrolled quite a bit and still haven’t seen the old Peter McKinnon. Just me?

Also Jason Vong (pretty funny) and a smaller creator called Julia Trotti for gear reviews. She never tears anything to shreds but I like her lens review approach. There’s also an older guys with a shrill voice whose name I forget now. Haven’t seen him around in a while.

And of course Manny Ortiz when he does his “how did he get that shot?” videos.

  • Jamie Windsor
  • Lucy Lumen
  • Shutter Slaps
  • Juan Buhler
  • William Sheepskin
  • Captured by Sam
  • Analog Insights

I look especially for people who aren’t the same straight white American/Canadian/UK guys. Obviously there are a lot on my list who are exactly that and that’s great, they’re great, but the further away from that overwhelming group I go, the more interesting things get.

I also get a LOT out of channels that discuss films and filmography — as in movies — and other design/culture stuff.

NorthBorders🙌

[–] ruud-1996@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

My go-to is definitly Thomas Heaton. But I like to watch Trond Westby so now and then. It’s mostly birdphotography but also show about his adventures which is nice to watch.

[–] GiantDwarfy@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Christopher Frost for lens reviews.

[–] TetrizZ1@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago
[–] Thunderbridge@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Might be a bit more on the videography side but applies to photography as well. I follow Ted Nemeth for his drone videos. He's the only drone youtuber I've seen so far that focuses on the actual art instead of "The only 5 drone moves you'll EVER need". And I love his passion

[–] liftoff_oversteer@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

James Popsys, Nigel Danson, Thomas Heaton, Mark Denney, Courtney Victoria, Kim Grant, Roman Fox, Simon d'Entremont, Duade Paton ...

[–] gilbertcarosin@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

anyone shooting film except peter Mckinnon

[–] MadeleineShepherd@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Thomas Heaton and Sean Tucker. I just like the vibes of their channels.

I watch GxAce all the time, his cinematografic style is beautiful and my aim as a photographer. It's very dark, ambiant and moody

[–] AlistairInIreland@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Jamie Windsor is excellent - he is operating at a far higher level of quality and creativity than anyone else out there, in my opinion.

[–] flying_viking@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Morten Hilmer!

Ex danish polar special forces. Does a lot of wildlife photography while cross country skiing, camping etc.

[–] Goku047@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Grainydays, T Hopper off the top of my head. Have some more in my subs list

Nick Carver

[–] Egg-3P0@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I like James Popsys, Vuhlandes and Dylan Spitz the most. Tatiana Hopper is also great, she delves into the styles of different famous photographers, a really great resource for inspiration and technique here and there.

[–] therealvonotny@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Highly recommend Kyle McDougall if you're into landscape, analog, and medium/large format.

[–] kapiczek@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Can someone recommend similar channel to Photo-Me-Ike?

[–] Kronocide@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Damien Bernal (french). He makes some really informative videos and reviews

[–] RamblinWrecked17@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Bryan Birks, Graincheck, and Faizal Westcott are 👌🏻

[–] LiquidPanic@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

MarkusPix.

He's tested everything when it comes to cameras, lenses, strobes, continuous lights, modifiers, stands, audio, etc. and is very frank about the fact that 99% of people don't need most new features in cameras.

His whole thing is getting the best results from cheaper gear or the smallest/lightest gear with the least amount of work.

[–] ZippySLC@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Gavin Hardcastle, Thomas Heaton, Michael Shainblum, and Evan Ranft mostly.

[–] Koblootski@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Paulie B’s Walkie Talkies have given me such a great perspective on street photography, styles, how each person approaches it, and what others look for. I don’t watch many vloggers on photography per se, but his are so genuine and authentic I never get tired of them.

[–] FloralChesterfield@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago
[–] djzippy@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I've followed Evan Ranft for a long time, and he does have some videos that are clearly targeted towards newer photographers, there's still many I love where he's exploring Atlanta and capturing shots and then showing them or the edits and I've always loved that.

One of my more recent favorites is Paulie B, and I think his videos are for every level. Not only does he do walk arounds of NYC I find fascinating, but his walk and talks with other photographers are incredibly englightening.

[–] StrxXx@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

My favorite is OpticalWander, binged watched his videos during lockdowns and got my own camera because of it.

Some others I watch:

Zenography, Simon Utak, James Popsys, Marco Aries and Snappiness

Bryan Birks is a solid dude

If you shoot Fujifilm, check out Pal2Tech. It's not so much the gear reviews as the loads of info on how to set up and use your camera that are worthwhile. He does a really good job of getting into the guts of the menu options, various settings, and exactly what each feature does.

[–] NineInchNips@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Haven’t seen his name and I’m from the area so I gotta shout out my man Vuhlandes for repping Detroit and making great photos in your own neighborhood

[–] CapricornGirl_Row16@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Fototripper, Alyn Wallace, Nick Page, Thomas Heaton.

[–] iamjeli@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

While he isn’t as “professional” as the people listed in order comments, I have always been a massive fan of North Borders.

Been watching him even before I got into photography and he always gets me motivated to go out and shoot until the anxiety hits and I decide to stay indoors.

[–] Soggy-Sundae-7317@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Peter McKinnon was great for me getting into photography, I prefer his older videos (~1-2 years ago) to the new stuff, now he feels a little cocky to me. But great for getting inspired and learning.

Surprised I’ve only seen Adrian at aows mentioned once! He’s my number one for 100% photography with no gear GS. Sean Tucker would be second. I’d put James Popsys in 3rd. Honorable mention goes to Alan Schaller who I think is the most talented street photographer working these days.
