Is there something I’m out of the loop on re:ML’s eyebrows?

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 21 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Mona Lisa has no clearly visible eyebrows or eyelashes, although Vasari describes the eyebrows in detail. In 2007, French engineer Pascal Cotte announced that his ultra-high resolution scans of the painting provide evidence that Mona Lisa was originally painted with eyelashes and eyebrows, but that these had gradually disappeared over time, perhaps as a result of overcleaning. Cotte discovered that the painting had been reworked several times, with changes made to the size of the face and the direction of gaze. He also found that in one layer the subject was depicted wearing numerous hairpins and a headdress adorned with pearls which was later scrubbed out and overpainted

And we’re making fun of Pascal in this context?

There's a lot of context missing here, the full "conversation" is this: https://imgur.io/gallery/3xT9L5x

There are several copies/versions of the ML thought (this is also a matter of debate) to be painted by Leonardo himself, and the Prado version – unlike the "original" – has been restored with state of the art techniques, and it shows eyebrows.

One thing many people don't realize is that all those famous paintings looked drastically different at their time, they have faded, yellowed, darkened, and very often have been altered, overpainted, or even cut.

I think it's in reply to a comment made off-screen?
