House Republicans voted behind closed doors to select Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana as their nominee for speaker, but it’s unclear if he can lock down the votes needed to win the gavel following Kevin McCarthy’s abrupt ouster.

House republicans nominated Steve Scalise (R Louisiana) 113 to 99 in a closed door meeting.

Questions now are:

  1. Does he have the votes to win the Speakership?
  2. How many rounds of voting is that going to take?
  3. Will Hamas’s attack on Israel force republicans to rally around Scalise/another candidate faster than they otherwise would?

I anticipate the answers being #1 “No,” #2 “Several,” and #3 “Probably not.”

@CoffeeAddict all I'm sure of is that congress is going to continue being a mess through the next funding bill date. My money is (unfortunately for the lives this will directly put in danger) on another CR without Ukraine or Israel funding unless we can get a deal to add both.

@CoffeeAddict that being said, I think Israel being a mess will make mil spend increase bill more likely to pass than when it was mostly for Ukraine.
