Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today/ . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

MODERATORS

Well, Iran and their allies' response may happen sometime this week and apparently they aren't talking to the US in order to negotiate how and where they will hit Israel (and Shoigu arrived in Tehran rather auspiciously), the Bangladeshi government just fell, F16s have been given to Ukraine, there are fascist riots in the UK, and Japan just had its worst stock fall since 1987 and seems to be taking several other countries/corporations with it. I don't really know where to look right now.

The COTW (Country of the Week) label is designed to spur discussion and debate about a specific country every week in order to help the community gain greater understanding of the domestic situation of often-understudied nations. If you've wanted to talk about the country or share your experiences, but have never found a relevant place to do so, now is your chance! However, don't worry - this is still a general news megathread where you can post about ongoing events from any country.

The Country of the Week is Iraq! Feel free to chime in with books, essays, longform articles, even stories and anecdotes or rants. More detail here.

Israel-Palestine Conflict

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Sources on the fighting in Palestine against Israel. In general, CW for footage of battles, explosions, dead people, and so on:

UNRWA daily-ish reports on Israel's destruction and siege of Gaza and the West Bank.

English-language Palestinian Marxist-Leninist twitter account. Alt here.
English-language twitter account that collates news (and has automated posting when the person running it goes to sleep).
Arab-language twitter account with videos and images of fighting.
English-language (with some Arab retweets) Twitter account based in Lebanon. - Telegram is @IbnRiad.
English-language Palestinian Twitter account which reports on news from the Resistance Axis. - Telegram is @EyesOnSouth.
English-language Twitter account in the same group as the previous two. - Telegram here.

English-language PalestineResist telegram channel.
More telegram channels here for those interested.

Various sources that are covering the Ukraine conflict are also covering the one in Palestine, like Rybar.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists
Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful. Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Pro-Russian Telegram Channels:

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language.
https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.
https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.
https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.
https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.
https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.
https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.
https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine Telegram Channels:

Almost every Western media outlet.
https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.
https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

Russia Launches Anti-terrorist Measures in Three Regions Under Ukrainian Attack

These measures are enacted to protect citizens and prevent potential terrorist acts. On Saturday, the Russian National Anti-Terrorism Committee (NAC) initiated a counterterrorism operation (CTO) regime across the Belgorod, Bryansk, and Kursk regions in response to recent security threats.

Article

The move comes after a Ukrainian attack in the Kursk region, which has resulted in civilian casualties and the destruction of residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure.

The NAC emphasized that the CTO’s legal framework includes the implementation of necessary measures and temporary restrictions under Article 11 of the Federal Law “On Combating Terrorism.”

These measures are aimed at ensuring the safety of the population, maintaining public order, and enhancing the protection of critical infrastructure.

The text reads, “Chebekino, Belgorod region, Russia. A Ukrainian drone deliberately attacks a civilian building and enters an apartment with an open window. The 75-year-old woman who lived there died in the explosion.” Meanwhile, Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko informed that twelve people are in critical condition following a large-scale Ukrainian assault on Russia’s Kursk region that began on Tuesday.

“55 people, including 8 children, are receiving inpatient treatment following shelling by Ukraine in the Kursk region,” he said and mentioned that 20 victims, including 2 children received outpatient care, adding that medical teams continued to work in the region and all victims were receiving the necessary medical assistance.

Russia declared a state of emergency in the Kursk region due to the tense situation there. The Defense Ministry said that a military operation to defeat the Ukrainian forces in Kursk was ongoing. The Ukrainian side lost 945 troops and 102 military vehicles since the start of the incursion.

The website of the Consortium of Aeronautical Industries and Air Services (CONVIASA) stopped operating due to a cyberattack.

Article

This cyberattack is a new threat from the “fascists who bow to U.S. imperialism,” Transportation Minister Velasquez said.

On Friday afternoon, the website of the Venezuelan Consortium of Aeronautical Industries and Air Services (CONVIASA) stopped operating due to a cyberattack.

Hours later, Venezuelan Transport Minister Ramon Velasquez confirmed that the CONVIASA website had been attacked by Anonymous.

“Known for its online actions, Anonymus directed its attention towards our airline. However, security measures have allowed us to maintain operational continuity and data confidentiality,” he said.

This cyberattack is a new threat from the “fascists who bow to U.S. imperialism and are linked to Elon Musk,” Velasquez added.

According to AviationLine, however, the hackers managed to display some travel documents attributed to officials of President Nicolas Maduro’s administration.

A similar attack occurred after the presidential elections held on Sunday, July 28, when hackers attacked the website of the National Electoral Council (CNE) and other Venezuelan telecommunications companies.

Days later, Elvis Amoroso, the president of the CNE, confirmed that the cyberattacks were carried out from different parts of the world and aimed to delay the transmission of polling station records and the process of disseminating results.

As part of the U.S. economic war against the Bolivarian nation, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), a division of the United States Department of the Treasury, sanctioned CONVIASA, prohibiting it from conducting international transactions that affect its business activities.

Looks like a military coup

The reports from Dhaka indicated that Hasina’s departure was sudden. She had been adamant till late morning on Monday that the security forces, including the army, had to use force against protestors who had broken curfew.

However, the heavy toll of over 100 deaths on Sunday had apparently dampened the army’s willingness to fire on their own people. Ultimately, the army appeared to have orchestrated her exit, which proceeded smoothly once she was convinced there was no other choice. She didn’t even have time to record a farewell speech, which she had wanted to do.

Smruti S Pattanaik of the Delhi-based think tank Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses stated that she always believed that removal of “such kind of leader was possible only through a third-party intervention, and that is the army”.

As an astute observer of Bangladesh, she had closely followed the Quota reform movement, noting its ups and downs as the government used force, imposed curfews, banned mobile networks, deployed the army, and saw the Supreme Court reverse an earlier judgment.

She questioned whether the previous Bangladeshi government had a reliable feedback loop in place if it believed the Supreme Court ruling had quelled the movement. “I was very surprised that Sheikh Hasina government didn’t get adequate intelligence on the nature of the protests, that it was more than just about quotas”.

Just a question for all you Newsheads out there: is there any people you folks would like to have an AMA with? Doesn't have to be just what we have here, just in general.
