Why is Worf in Engineering anyway?

Fawkes was so full of shit. This isn't about honor. I literally will not survive the task. YOU might come out of it stronger, let alone unscathed.

Edit: Bonus Trek connection with Michael Dorn as supermutant Marcus.

Todd is a railroading DM.

I don't blame Fawkes.

I blame whoever at Bethesda wrote it and also whoever thought that was an acceptable plot point/ending and didn't ask for changes (which I guess is Todd Howard but then again he wasn't the director for FO3). They are so bad at actual logic and RPG design.

[–] ummthatguy@lemmy.world 15 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Entirely fair. Fawkes is a generally great companion/tank/storage unit. The blame falls on the writers' lack of imagination (and appropriate dev time). Not to mention Todd "it just works" Howard.

edit: even if it wasn't under Todd's direction, I'm still generally annoyed with his shenanigans. More so since eventually, I will wind up playing the next TES and Fallout entries. Presumably after a year post release and on a reasonable sale.

Just a reminder, this is only implemented because of a game breaking bug that would occur when you tried to send him in to do the job. I remember because I encountered that bug; I bought the game disk day one and didn't update it until later. You literally had to pick a different option because if you had him do it, he'd be like "sure thing that's a great idea," and then he'd walk in there and flip the switch and then the game would hard crash to desktop.

I'm out of the loop. What's the joke here? I'm guessing it's a fallout thing?

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 7 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

yes. the super mutant is immune to radiation, but you can't send them in to do the job. apparently you originally could but it got patched out because of a game breaking bug.

which is weird; Bethesda games are known for their polish and general lack of bugs.

So i know this is just a joke, but I imagine the simulation limits one's options to those present in the room. If she wants to send someone more likely to survive, like Data, there would be a roadblock:

  • Not enough time to get there from the bridge
  • Site to site transporter is down
  • Spot ate Data's communicator badge
  • Data is commanding the saucer section in another sector
  • Data is on Risa hooking up with Sela

Something limits the options to those in the room. Georgi is the most qualified, and time is short

[–] mycodesucks@lemmy.world 56 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Oh, absolutely. There are good reasons why that wouldn't be an option.

But those would get in the way of the joke, so I'm choosing to ignore them.

[–] Entropywins@lemmy.world 11 points 3 months ago

A most excellent choice I may add.

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 8 points 3 months ago

Well, those points weren't in the room, so you can't use them anyway.

[–] tallricefarmer@sopuli.xyz 29 points 3 months ago (3 children)

But radiation would damage electronics too, and Data is irreplaceable

[–] mycodesucks@lemmy.world 32 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (2 children)

Possibly, but you know who has a history of surviving things that would kill any other crew member and has exhibited at least incredible radiation resistance even in that very same episode?

Also, it's very un-starfleet to consider one member of the crew more irreplaceable or valuable than any other, even if it is true.

[–] ummthatguy@lemmy.world 38 points 3 months ago

Picard made the best use of his crew and their abilities, but he values them all equally.

One of my favorite retorts of his:

[–] Zorque@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

Nah, he'd just lose his memory for a while, then cause a radiation poisoning epidemic. Then be speared to death when he tries to fix it.

[–] Infynis@midwest.social 3 points 3 months ago

Everyone on the crew is irreplaceable. Data wouldn't want special treatment

Meanwhile on the USS Voyager:

Tuvok and Chakatoy encounter each other in the hallway near Holodeck 1.

Tuvok: Commander, I am concerned about the Captain’s continuous holodeck usage. She has not exited the room for the past three hours, and I believe it may be inhibiting the effective operation of the ship.

Chakatoy: It’s been a rough week. I’m sure she’s just blowing off some steam.

Suddenly, they heard muffled noises through the holodeck door.

Tuvix: I have a right to live!

(Excessive machine gun noises)

Chakotay taps his combadge.

Chakotay: Doctor, can you come to holodeck 1? I think something’s wrong with the captain.

(No offense to Janeway. Just a fun caricature.)

Why not send an Exocomp or two into the tube of death?

[–] OpenStars@discuss.online 11 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (2 children)

Oh no, what have you awoken...?! :-P (wrong show answers only)

i could stand maybe ten seconds tops of a DRD sadly singing 1812 Overture as it died of radiation damage until I'd have to climb into the fuckin condiut myself to save it

How many times do I have to tell you that crackers don't matter!

[–] OpenStars@discuss.online 1 points 3 months ago

There is a limit though (bc there are no more than 4 lights!)

[–] WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I don't think leading a platoon of Stormtroopers into the conduit would fix anything.

[–] OpenStars@discuss.online 1 points 3 months ago

Not true! It would be a fun way to spend an hour... :-D
