Try not to spam the same link to multiple feddit.uk communities.
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.
Posts should be related to UK-centric news, and should be either a link to a reputable source, or a text post on this community.
Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.
If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread.
Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.
Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.
I will say we desperately need an r/cricket alike before the Ashes starts. Was rather hoping not to have to take matters into my own hands - but if I understand your intention, your sub is more about playing, right?
Edit: just found c/cricket on lemmy.ml and lemmy.world, but maybe a UK-oriented one wouldn't be a terrible idea...?
i think i might expand it, if there's interest ? /r/cricket was awesome but ended up a bit noisy and lots of ipl which i didnt care for.

I think the best way to promote is to announce, but not to make any assumptions about whether yours, or a competing sub of the same topic, is the one that is to take off with popularity.
I think subs of similar topics should merge until communities get large enough to desire a topical split.
Right now I'm looking for similar communities and making posts redirecting them to mine. You could probably promote outside of Lemmy but then you have to explain how everything works which is not my strong suit.
