You need to try kettle corn. Sweet and salty heaven.

[–] hemko@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I've seen them in shop and tested out. It feels wrong

[–] tweeks@feddit.nl 6 points 6 months ago

It's the best. Caramelized or just with sugar.

[–] MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz 22 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Huh. TIL.

To me popcorn goes in the same category as potato chips, salty. Always salty. But apparently it lands with candy for a part of the world? I had no idea.

Do you sweet popcorn people get some other salty snack? Or are all your movie snacks sugary?

To me the ultimate combo is salty popcorn (maybe even buttery) and a sweet drink.

Even in the US sweet popcorn is a thing. We have kettle corn, or those tins with caramel popcorn. Salty/buttery is definitely the most popular though.

[–] SmoothLiquidation@lemmy.world 7 points 6 months ago

Yeah, but usually that’s not at the movies.

[–] MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz 2 points 6 months ago

I'm sure I can find some if I look here too.

I'm curious about what people eat together with them, because to me salty+savory snacks go with sweet+sour soda.

Do people in these countries go sweet+sweet, or is there more to this?

In Germany, all cinemas I visited had a salty option, the most common being nachos with some dip. But I don't remember ever seeing salty popcorn offered here, even outside cinemas it is rare.

[–] HerrVorragend@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago

Rare indeed. The first time I came across salty popcorn as a kid, I felt the kind of betrayal that leads to a livelong grudge.

I still think salty popcorn is disappointing and weird.

[–] Mubelotix@jlai.lu 13 points 6 months ago (2 children)

I didn't even know salty popcorn existed

[–] aeki@slrpnk.net 11 points 6 months ago

That's so interesting. I love caramelized popcorn, but when I think of default popcorn, it's always salty!

[–] lugal@lemmy.ml 3 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Don't try it, it feels wrong

[–] Servais@dormi.zone 16 points 6 months ago (2 children)

It's kind of funny that there is another comment that says that sweet popcorn is wrong. It seems it mostly depends on what you are used to.

[–] RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de 10 points 6 months ago (1 children)

No. Everyone else is always wrong. Yes.

[–] vaionko@sopuli.xyz 7 points 6 months ago

No. Everyone ~~else~~ is always wrong. Yes.

[–] lugal@lemmy.ml 2 points 6 months ago

I'm not going to admit that I was inspired by that one because it would give them legitimacy. Popcorn is supposed to be sweet.

I was thinking of moving to Germany but I just can't now. Sweet popcorn? In a theater? Half the reason I even go to theaters is so I can eat enough buttery topping with some popcorn mixed in to feel sick. The absolute madness of putting sugar on popcorn, I'd sooner eat a bowl of unpopped kernels

But for real all you salty/savory popcorn lovers out there: If you haven't tried it yet put some powdered brewers yeast on your popcorn. That stuff is magical. Goes weirdly well on pizza too

[–] EmoDuck@sh.itjust.works 5 points 6 months ago

Most cinemas also offer salty popcorn. It's nice that they accommodate weirdos like you

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 6 months ago

I just learned that Western Europe are my enemies. If I find out they support pineapple on pizza, we're going to war.

/s obviously, for those of you who are dumb fucks

[–] 1rre@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 6 months ago

Indirectly confirm through putting marmite in tomato sauce that a yeasty flavour on pizza is exceptionally good

[–] NounsAndWords@lemmy.world 9 points 6 months ago (1 children)

If this seems strange don't even ask what they're doing in Texas....

[–] peto@lemm.ee 17 points 6 months ago (1 children)

What are they doing in Texas? Just handfuls of bullets served in a cowboy hat?

Is the fork included or do you need to bring your own?

[–] Alexstarfire@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago

You probably get the pickle in a bag.

[–] mumblerfish@lemmy.world 9 points 6 months ago

I was at the cinema in Germany and asked if the popcorn was sweet or not, and of course it was, just wanted to make sure. So I asked for some candy instead. The clerk was soooo confused. "But... These are sweet too...?". Yeah, but I expect candy to be sweet.

[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago

Popcorn at the cinema is always salty (or more accurately, fake buttery). Popcorn anywhere else is...eh, salty, sweet, anything.

Personally I don't like sweet (kettle or caramel) but that's just personal. My grandmother adored both kettle and caramel.

I suppose I didn't mind chocolate covered Halloween style popcorn though!

[–] janitor@sopuli.xyz 1 points 6 months ago

Ooh, I've only come across sweet popcorn in China and thought it's their specialty. Then again I've never been to movies in either Germany of France.

[–] Manzas@lemdro.id 1 points 6 months ago

Lithuania is either just go to any cinema and store and you will get that conclusion

[–] 7eter@feddit.de 1 points 5 months ago

I always try to get salty popcorn whenever possible. Never did I imagine it was standard in so many countries!
